Isabella Gates returned to the living room to find her son sitting on the sofa, taking a slow drag from his cigarette. His expression was somber, and Clara Vance was nowhere to be seen. Isabella could not help but frown.
"Where is Clara?"
"Did you make things clear to her?"
Julian Lowell paused, holding his cigarette as he narrowed his eyes at her. "Make what clear?"
Isabella stepped closer, her tone stern. "About marriage, of course! The gap between your social standings is massive. Marriage is entirely out of the question. Tell her to stop dreaming!"
Julian prided himself on remaining composed no matter the situation, but hearing these targeted insults directed at Clara made his brow furrow in profound irritation.
He let out a cold scoff, sitting up straight to crush his cigarette into the ashtray.
His aristocratic mother clearly had no idea how presumptuous she was being. Right now, he was the one desperate to be with Clara, not the other way around.
Isabella scowled at his reaction, feeling deeply unsettled. "What are you laughing at? Am I wrong? With Clara's background, she isn't fit for the Lowell family!"
"You are meant to achieve great things in the future, and what can she possibly do to help you?"
"Forget about helping—it would be a miracle if she didn't drag you down! Look at how much money Zane has leeched from us over the years!"
"That whole family is full of shameless parasites. They make me sick!"
Julian's face darkened completely.
"Are you saying that just because Clara isn't practically useful, she can't be with me?"
"What about you?"
He stared at Isabella. "Over the years, you haven't worked a day in your life, yet your expenses are astronomical. To put it bluntly, to me, you're just a walking credit card machine with no real use. Should I get rid of you too?"
Isabella could hardly believe her ears. Her face flushed a furious red.
