Madeline Lockwood.
Dominic's sister.
In the six years Seraphina was married to Dominic, this beloved sister-in-law had made a sport out of treating her like an indentured servant whenever she visited.
Seraphina's brow instinctively furrowed in distaste.
She glanced to the side. Dominic was rounding the hood from the driver's seat.
Meanwhile, Cynthia stepped out of the passenger side and took her place right next to Madeline.
The three of them, assembled like a picture-perfect nightmare, right in front of her.
Seraphina cursed under her breath. She pivoted on her heel, intending to take a detour down a side road, but before she could take a full step, a shrill voice pierced the air.
"Seraphina Sinclair."
Madeline's voice was loud and piercing, dripping with condescension. "Stop right there."
Seraphina took a deep breath, stopped in her tracks, and turned around.
Madeline took two steps closer, raking her judgmental gaze up and down Seraphina's frame. She assessed the dust on her hem, the simple folder in her hand, and finally zeroed in on her mud-splattered flats.
"You stay out all day, abandon your child, just so you can play blue-collar worker in a dump like this?"
Her voice was booming. A few factory workers passing by turned their heads to stare.
Seraphina gripped the folder tightly, staying silent.
She fully expected this reaction. In Madeline's eyes, Seraphina had never been fit for anything beyond the most degrading manual labor.
Madeline took another step forward, crossing her arms. "I heard you've been ever so busy lately. Running around all day. If I didn't know any better, I'd think you'd become some corporate hotshot. But look at you—you're just slumming it at a dusty rock quarry."
Dominic's gaze shifted, that layer of judgment thickening.
Seraphina stood her ground, her expression utterly unbothered.
Madeline kept her arms crossed, her chin tilted toward the sky. "Women like you are hilarious. You have zero skills. You complain about having no dignity while staying home to care for a child, so you run out here to eat dust?"
"Well, congratulations. At home, you just had to put up with a few scoldings from family. But look at you now! People probably think you're some stray beggar off the street. You're completely humiliating the Lockwood family."
Dominic frowned slightly, the cold, calculating judgment in his eyes never wavering.
It was a silent endorsement of every single word Madeline said—as if her vicious insults were the absolute truth, the exact thoughts he had harbored but refused to voice aloud.
The smirk on Cynthia's face only grew wider.
Seraphina took a deep breath and stared dead at Madeline. "Are you done? If you're done, I'm leaving. Go back to whatever it is you're doing."
