Dominic strode forward with steady, powerful steps, walking straight over to Cynthia's side.
Cynthia looked up at him, her eyes brimming with alluring affection. "Dominic, you're here."
The surrounding crowd fell utterly silent.
Quite a few people recognized Dominic. As the head of the Lockwood family—the wealthiest in Northport—his fortune was immeasurable. To him, thirty million was nothing but pocket change.
By speaking up, he had publicly thrown his weight behind Cynthia for everyone to see.
Standing her ground, Seraphina inhaled deeply as a wave of bitter sorrow swelled in her chest.
But she quickly suppressed the emotion. Without drawing attention, she opened her phone's camera app and aimed the lens at the two figures by the display stand.
Dominic stood next to Cynthia, his posture angled as if shielding her protectively.
Cynthia looked up at him with a smile. "Dominic, I really love that stone."
Dominic's tone was gentle. "If you like it, we'll buy it."
He glanced at the owner behind the stand, his voice dropping a few degrees in temperature. "How much? Wrap it up for Cynthia."
Standing behind his counter, the owner began to sweat.
He had recognized Dominic too. As a lowly gemstone merchant, he absolutely couldn't afford to offend the patriarch of the Lockwood family.
But the gemstone industry had its rules. When someone was in the middle of a negotiation, others weren't supposed to casually swoop in and steal the deal.
He wiped his brow, stammering, "Well... this..."
Dominic furrowed his brows, just about to speak when a voice called out from the back of the crowd.
"Seraphina!"
Seraphina turned her head.
Julian Shaw walked out from the crowd.
He spoke up. "Mr. Shaw, I respect you, but this is, after all, my—"
The phrase 'family affair' caught in his throat, left unspoken.
He subconsciously glanced at Cynthia beside him, and his intense demeanor dialed back slightly.
Seraphina saw it clearly—Dominic was protecting Cynthia.
Julian looked at him and let out a sharp scoff. "Your what? Mr. Lockwood, let's not have double standards. You're allowed to throw money around to win a smile from a pretty lady, but I'm not allowed to protect my friend?"
As he spoke, he tilted his head to look at Cynthia, who was standing behind Dominic. His tone dripped with even more disdain. "For the record, Seraphina and I have known each other for years. It's only right that I help her. But this woman—who is she to you? On what grounds are you standing up for her?"
The moment those words left his mouth, the gazes from the crowd turned highly speculative, and murmurs broke out.
Seeing Cynthia standing next to Dominic, everyone had originally assumed she was his woman. But with Julian laying it out like that, the entire dynamic instantly shifted.
It seemed this relationship was rather murky after all.
