Jenna was looking down at her phone. Seeing Seraphina return, she glanced up with a smile. "Ms. Sinclair, did you order already?"
"Yes, I picked some mild and light dishes. I hope that works for you," Seraphina said as she sat down.
Jenna nodded. "That's perfect. I actually grew up near the coast, so I love seafood."
Seraphina smiled without saying a word. In truth, she had already guessed that from Jenna's slight accent.
The waiter brought over two plates of appetizers, and the two women chatted about the project in a relaxed atmosphere.
A little while later, Jenna stood up looking slightly apologetic. "Ms. Sinclair, I'm going to run to the restroom."
Seraphina stood up with her. "I'll go with you."
Jenna waved her hands quickly. "Oh, no, I can manage. Plus, our food is coming right up. If the waiter sees the table empty, they might think we left."
Seraphina glanced at the appetizers already on the table and sat back down. "Just be careful, take your time."
"I will, don't worry," Jenna replied with a smile, heading toward the back of the restaurant.
Seraphina lowered her head to take a sip of her water. But almost immediately, she heard a sharp cry from the direction of the restrooms.
It wasn't loud, but Seraphina instantly recognized Jenna's voice.
She shot to her feet and hurried over.
Around the corner, Jenna was leaning against the wall for support. The back of her right hand was bright red, and a dark stain soaked the sleeve of her blouse.
A shattered ceramic mug lay on the floor opposite her, the spilled tea still steaming.
Yvette stood right across from her, shaking out her hand with a look of undisguised disgust.
"Fat, in the way, and putting on an act. You're exactly like Seraphina. Birds of a feather flock together."
Yvette had come over to use the restroom and spotted the pregnant woman the moment she turned the corner. Recognizing her as the woman sitting with Seraphina, she had felt an immediate wave of revulsion.
As they passed each other, Yvette intentionally rammed her shoulder into Jenna. The impact sent Jenna stumbling into a nearby side table, knocking over a freshly poured cup of tea right onto her hand.
The tea was boiling hot.
Jenna hadn't been able to stop her cry of pain.
Yvette scoffed. "She's the one who was blind and bumped into me. A pregnant woman should stay home instead of waddling around in public getting in people's way. It's her own fault."
Seraphina's hands curled into tight fists. "Yvette, you're crossing the line. Apologize right now."
Yvette acted as if she had just heard the funniest joke in the world. "Me? Apologize to her? Are you out of your mind, Seraphina?"
"You shoved her and burned her. You have to apologize."
"Like hell I will!" Yvette's voice pitched up several decibels. "She's fat, ugly, and takes up space! If anyone's apologizing, it's her to me!"
Jenna stood behind Seraphina, pressing her pale lips together.
Seraphina's gaze was as cold as frost.
She took a step forward, completely shielding Jenna behind her, and locked eyes with Yvette.
"So you won't apologize."
A sudden chill crept down Yvette's spine under that intense stare.
