Back at her desk, Seraphina felt unsettled for the rest of the afternoon.
Dominic's final, icy glare played on loop in her mind.
She knew him too well.
He would never just let this go.
Still, the afternoon passed without any further incidents.
After clocking out, she realized it had been a while since she last visited her family, so she hailed a cab and gave the driver the address to the Sinclair residence.
Arthur and Clara Sinclair were already home when she arrived.
Seeing Seraphina walk through the door, they were overjoyed and immediately bustled into the kitchen to cook extra dishes for dinner.
Seraphina sprawled out on the sofa, turned on the TV, and idly munched on some snacks from the coffee table.
There really was no place like home.
However, she soon realized that her brother, Zach, was also home.
He was holed up in his room alone, looking incredibly down.
She pushed the door open and walked in. Zach jolted slightly, and when he looked up, a flash of surprise crossed his eyes, as if he hadn't even heard her arrive.
"Hey, how did you find the time to come by today?"
Seraphina walked over, pulled out a chair, and sat down opposite him.
"Zach, is something wrong?"
Zach's hand, gripping a pen, paused for a second before he forced a smile. "No, nothing's wrong. I'm doing great."
Seraphina just stared at him, unblinking.
Feeling deeply uncomfortable under her scrutiny, Zach shifted his mouse, keeping his eyes glued to his computer's screensaver.
After a long while, he let go of the mouse and sighed heavily.
"Okay, yeah, something came up."
Seraphina's heart sank.
She had dragged her brother down with her.
Zach sighed again, still blaming himself.
"I'm sorry. I know things haven't been easy for you in the Lockwood family. I just wanted to build the business up, make some real money, so you'd have financial backing. So you could hold your head high in that house."
His voice trailed off, sounding utterly defeated.
"But in the end, I'm just useless. I can't get anything right, and you're the one who suffers for it."
Seeing the scattered gray hairs at his temples, Seraphina felt a painful ache in her chest.
Zach was only a few years older than her, right in the prime of his life, yet half his hair was already turning gray.
She knew how incredibly hard he had worked for this company, all so he could provide a better life for their family.
Zach sank back into his chair, his eyes devoid of hope.
"I've been thinking about it for hours. Maybe it's time to just shut Sinclair Microtech down."
