Her handwriting was elegant and decisive, flowing line after line without a single second of hesitation.
Halfway through her deduction, someone in the audience let out a sharp gasp.
As she continued to write, the two factions that had just been screaming themselves red in the face fell into a stunned, reverent silence.
Completing the final equation, she took a half-step back and capped her marker.
The entire whiteboard was covered in a flawless, interconnected deduction. Every line bled perfectly into the next, bound by unbreakable, irrefutable logic.
The room was dead silent.
Then, someone slowly began to clap. Within seconds, a thunderous wave of applause erupted, echoing off the walls of the seminar room.
Seraphina looked back at Dean Vance.
The old man sat with his arms crossed, a massive, arrogant grin plastered across his face, his eyes shining with absolute triumph.
Deep down, he was profoundly relieved. She truly was a once-in-a-generation scientific prodigy.
After the seminar concluded, Dean Vance walked out with Seraphina, strolling casually beneath the canopy of ancient sycamore trees lining the campus walkway.
With his hands clasped behind his back, he couldn't wipe the smile off his face.
"Well, kid, what do you think? Nuclear research is where you truly belong, right?"
Seraphina smiled softly. "You give me too much credit, Professor."
"Too much credit, my foot!" Dean Vance scoffed. "Did you see the look on those arrogant researchers' faces? They looked like they had just seen a ghost."
He paused, his pace slowing as his tone shifted into something far more serious.
"Look, kid, I'll be blunt. Now that you're back, I need you on this new project. It's non-negotiable."
Seraphina's steps faltered.
Dean Vance waved a hand, refusing to let her interrupt, and plowed straight ahead.
"I know you have reservations. You just returned to the workforce, and Dean Zhou's energy projects are no walk in the park. But look at yourself. When you stood up there today, did your hands shake? No. Your eyes were on fire."
Seraphina opened her mouth to speak, deeply moved that her mentor saw right through her.
The old man was as fiercely observant as he was demanding.
She had barely taken a few steps when she spotted two silhouettes walking closely together in the distance.
Dominic and Cynthia.
Their fingers were intertwined as they strolled beneath the dappled shade of the sycamore trees.
It was an annoyingly picture-perfect scene, drawing envious stares and whispers from the students passing by.
Seraphina's eyes turned glacial. Taking a deep breath, she was about to turn and walk the other way.
Suddenly, a loud voice called out.
"Dominic? Dominic, is that really you? You're a legend around here!"
"And this must be your wife! She's gorgeous. You two look so romantic together!"
It was a current student at the university.
He clearly recognized the famous alumni, Dominic, but completely mistook the woman on his arm for the elusive Mrs. Lockwood.
