Dominic Lockwood had studied nuclear research here as well, so the current students could rightfully consider him a senior alumnus.
Now that his company was beginning to explore this sector, he had received an invitation to the upcoming Nuclear Research Conference, and he was here today specifically to pick up his registration form.
He didn't originally need to fetch it in person, but Cynthia Ross had been utterly shocked when she found out about his invitation.
Her eyes had filled with absolute adoration for him.
Cynthia had also taken a brief nuclear research course abroad, and she claimed the domestic Institute of Nuclear Research was a place she had always dreamed of visiting.
So, Dominic brought her along.
The two walked hand in hand across the campus.
They made a stunningly attractive couple, drawing the attention of numerous passersby who marveled at how beautiful their romance seemed.
When Cynthia heard a passerby mistakenly refer to her as Mrs. Lockwood, she offered a graceful, radiant smile, happily accepting the title.
Seeing her return to her bright, sunny self, Dominic felt a profound sense of warmth.
He loved this version of Cynthia.
She hadn't changed; she was still exactly the woman he held in his heart.
In that moment, all the misunderstandings of the past few days vanished, leaving only the beautiful version of Cynthia he remembered.
Seraphina Sinclair watched all of this unfold with a detached expression.
There wasn't a single ripple of emotion in her chest—just a strange, settling calm.
In the past, her jaw would have clenched tight, and she would have spent the night crying under her covers.
But now, she just stood there, even allowing a faint, ironic smile to touch her lips.
So this was what it felt like to no longer be in love.
It was freeing.
Dominic glanced up casually and locked eyes with Seraphina.
A barely perceptible frown creased his forehead before he quickly smoothed it out.
His face remained completely blank, as if he were looking at an irrelevant stranger.
Seeing him stare, Seraphina didn't avoid his gaze, meeting it head-on with an equally frosty demeanor.
They walked along the sycamore-lined path to the main building of the Institute, went up a few flights of stairs, and stopped at the office at the very end of the corridor.
Cynthia tightened her grip on her handbag.
Today, she had brought a famous painting worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to gift to Dean Vance.
She claimed she came to admire the Institute, but in reality, she desperately wanted to get in.
Her credentials from a small overseas workshop couldn't withstand real scrutiny; if she could use this opportunity to enter the Institute, she would solidify her status as a top-tier nuclear researcher.
To achieve this, she had specifically looked into Dean Vance's hobbies, learned he loved the historical works of Lionel Sharpe, and pulled strings to acquire one, hoping this targeted gift would secure her a spot as a special-admit student.
She knew the Institute had such a position, though they had only ever accepted one student since its inception.
Rumor had it the student was a woman who didn't even major in nuclear research, so Cynthia figured if someone else could do it, she certainly could too.
Dominic raised his hand and knocked on the door.
"Come in," a booming, energetic voice called from inside.
Pushing the door open, they saw Dean Vance sitting behind his desk, flipping through some documents. He looked up, and his expression softened when he saw Dominic.
