"Ah, Dominic, you're here."
Dean Vance had once mentored Dominic personally, and Dominic had been a brilliant student, but he eventually poured all his energy into business and drifted away from the academic world.
That included drifting away from his mentor.
So, the fact that Dominic was visiting today took Dean Vance by surprise.
Dominic's demeanor took on an air of deep respect. "Yes, Dean Vance, I'm here to pick up the invitation, and I wanted to pay you a visit while I was at it."
"I see." Dean Vance's eyes crinkled in a warm smile, but then he noticed Cynthia clinging to Dominic's arm, and his face instantly fell.
His gaze sharpened with scrutiny.
Others might not know that Dominic was a married man, but Dean Vance did.
He also knew that Dominic's wife was none other than his beloved Seraphina.
Furthermore, he had recently caught wind that the reason Seraphina was stepping back into the professional world was to finalize her divorce from this very man.
Looking at the situation now, he realized Seraphina was entirely justified in leaving him. The divorce wasn't even finalized, and here he was, publicly parading around arm-in-arm with another woman.
It must have been so difficult for Seraphina.
The thought made his expression darken even further.
"If I remember correctly, you are a married man."
Dominic froze for a second before giving a stiff nod.
Then, he shifted slightly and spoke in a steady, professional tone.
"Dean Vance, this is Cynthia, the Chief Technology Engineer at my company. Her professional expertise is top-notch, and she is a rare talent. We had some free time today, so I brought her by to see the campus."
Cynthia took a half-step forward right on cue, a polite smile resting on her lips. She pulled the rolled-up canvas from her bag and offered it to Dean Vance with both hands.
"Dean Vance, I've heard so much about you. This is just a small token of my appreciation. I heard you admire the work of Lionel Sharpe, so I tracked this down for you. I hope you'll accept it."
"Oh, how could I forget!"
"Seraphina absolutely loves geological specimens, and it took me forever to find this piece. Quick, bring it to her before she gets in her car and leaves."
He snatched the rock from his assistant's hands and bolted toward the door.
Mr. Zane called out from behind him, "Dean Vance, slow down! Why do you always panic whenever it involves her? The notebook! You forgot the notebook!"
Dean Vance stopped dead in his tracks.
"Look at my memory. I spent years compiling these notes, I know she'll love them. Why didn't you remind me sooner? Give them here, hurry."
Dean Vance snatched the notebook from Mr. Zane and rushed toward the hallway.
After taking two steps, he remembered he wasn't alone and waved a dismissive hand at Dominic without looking back.
"Oh, if you have nothing else to discuss, you two can leave."
