Harvey's eyes shifted shiftily, a vicious scheme hatching in his mind.
Stepping backward discreetly, he pulled out his phone and fired off a rapid text message.
He was obsessed with breeding snakes, operating a private vivarium right next door filled with exotic pets.
Among his collection were several highly venomous species he had spent a fortune importing.
After sending a few explicit instructions, he pocketed his phone and strolled back to the edge of the pool, his face a perfect mask of calm.
Moments later, a staff member slipped in through a side door, clutching a heavy black canvas bag.
The worker crept over to Seraphina's lane, dumped two thick snakes directly into her lane, and flashed Harvey a subtle thumbs-up.
Harvey's lips twisted into a dark smirk.
He raised the whistle to his mouth and blew it hard.
"The final round! Five hundred-meter freestyle... Go!"
At the sharp blast, two bodies dove simultaneously into the water.
Seraphina's dive was flawless, her arms slicing cleanly through the surface as her powerful legs kicked up a rhythmic, accelerating wake.
Cynthia was equally swift, keeping pace right beside her.
The two women tore through the water, remaining practically neck and neck.
The crowd held their breath, every pair of eyes glued to the intense battle unfolding in the pool.
For the first hundred meters, Seraphina held a half-body lead.
Cynthia gritted her teeth, pushing her muscles to the absolute limit to close the gap.
By the two-hundred-meter mark, they were dead even.
But suddenly, Seraphina's explosive momentum completely stalled.
Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted two massive snakes.
The terrifying reptiles were gliding rapidly straight toward her, locking onto her like heat-seeking missiles.
She abruptly aborted her stroke, her body freezing in the water for a split second.
One of the snakes slithered past her leg, the freezing, rough scales scraping horrifyingly against her bare skin.
The spectators on the deck only saw Seraphina inexplicably stop moving.
"What's wrong with her?"
"Did she run out of breath?"
"I knew it. She never stood a chance against Cynthia."
A delighted grin spread across Yvette's face.
"I told you all. Cynthia is going to absolutely crush her."
Through her goggles, Cynthia caught a glimpse of Seraphina halting.
A massive, dark-gray serpent was writhing on the wet tiles, furiously flicking its tongue.
Total pandemonium erupted instantly.
"Snake! There's a snake!"
"How the hell did a snake get in the pool?!"
"She wasn't giving up; she was fighting off a snake!"
Tristan's face went completely pale, and he bolted straight toward the edge of the water.
Dominic's pupils dilated in raw shock.
He instinctively took a step forward, only to freeze dead in his tracks.
Seraphina had no time to worry about the screaming crowd. She locked her eyes on the finish line.
Cynthia was already in the final stretch, tearing closer and closer to victory.
Seraphina sucked in a massive breath, submerged, and launched herself forward with everything she had left.
Water tore past her fingertips as her legs hammered the water with maximum velocity, closing the massive gap with impossible speed.
Half the crowd surged to their feet in sheer disbelief.
Just as Cynthia's fingertips extended to tap the concrete wall, a second hand shot past her from the neighboring lane, slamming against the finish line a fraction of a second faster.
