A moment later, a maid approached Seraphina, informing her that the little miss would be arriving shortly and asked her to wait in Lily's room.
Seraphina traced the rim of her teacup, her gaze turning cold.
She stood up and followed the maid toward the second floor.
The Fernwood Estate was massive, yet Winifred had never bothered to allocate a guest room for Seraphina.
In the past, whenever Seraphina was summoned to do chores and grew exhausted, the most she was allowed to do was rest briefly in her daughter's room. Winifred absolutely forbade her from spending the night.
Walking down the thick, carpeted hallway, Seraphina took a few steadying breaths.
Lily's room was at the end of the corridor, the door left slightly ajar. Pushing it open, she found the room impeccably tidy.
Seraphina sat on the edge of the bed.
The maid walked in carrying a glass of juice, placing it within her reach with practiced politeness. "Mrs. Lockwood, please have a drink and rest for a moment. The little miss will be here soon."
Seraphina glanced at the juice.
"Alright, leave it there."
The maid offered a slight bow, retreated from the room, and firmly shut the door behind her.
Silence fell over the room.
Seraphina picked up the glass, brought it beneath her nose, and frowned slightly at the scent.
Glass in hand, she opened the door and stepped back out.
There was a small lounge located around the corner on the second floor, separated from the study by a single wall.
She walked in, placed her glass of orange juice on the table, and poured herself a glass of plain water from the refreshment cabinet, taking a deliberate sip.
She then slid the orange juice to the opposite side of the table, sat down, and pulled out her phone to make a call.
The call connected.
Seraphina spoke directly. "You're at The Fernwood Estate, right?"
Dominic's voice came through the receiver. "Yes."
"I want to discuss the divorce terms with you," Seraphina said in a calm, unhurried tone. "I'm in the second-floor lounge. If you have time, come over now."
She kept her head bowed, the overhead light casting shadows over her lowered eyelashes.
Watching her infuriatingly unhurried demeanor, the fire in Dominic's chest surged higher.
He grabbed the glass of orange juice sitting in front of him and downed more than half of it in one gulp.
Slamming the glass back down, he sneered, "It seems you genuinely don't care about your family's survival."
Seraphina looked up. "It's exactly because I care about them that I'm asking you to raise the offer."
She stood up, picking up her own glass of water. "I'll think about it some more. You should do the same."
Dominic's eyes turned completely arctic. "Seraphina, my patience is wearing thin."
Ignoring his threat, Seraphina turned and headed toward the door.
Surprisingly, she didn't argue with him this time, but watching her walk away only made his expression grow even more hostile.
Dominic clenched his fists, picked up his phone, and was just about to dial a number when a bizarre heat flared in his throat, rapidly spreading from his chest to his limbs, causing his temples to throb violently.
