He dropped his phone back onto the table, his fists clenching tight.
His vision began to blur.
He braced his hands against the table, trying to push himself up, but his legs completely gave out, sending him crashing heavily back into the chair.
He squeezed his eyes shut, taking several deep breaths in a desperate attempt to suppress the overwhelming wave of dizziness.
Seraphina stepped out of the lounge and began walking back down the hallway.
As she rounded the first corner, she caught a glimpse of a dress darting behind a pillar just a short distance ahead.
The corner of her lips quirked upward, but her pace remained steady as she continued walking.
Simultaneously, she raised her phone, pretending to be deep in conversation.
"Exactly, I'm absolutely not getting a divorce," she declared to the disconnected screen. "I'm perfectly secure now. My career, my brother's, and my father's—everything is stable."
She paused, as if listening to someone on the other end, before letting out a light chuckle.
"I know Dominic will eventually see my value, and when he does, he won't want to divorce me anymore. I'll sit securely in the position of Mrs. Lockwood, and he'll spend all his money on me."
"Oh, you mean Cynthia? Don't worry about her. She's completely irrelevant."
Seraphina lowered her voice slightly, yet ensured her words carried clearly through the quiet hall. "She's been hovering around Dominic for years, and what has it gotten her? No title, no status. Dominic is someone who values emotional bonds above all else. If there was anything real between them, he would have taken responsibility for her ages ago."
A note of pure smugness crept into her tone. "Look at my situation back then—he took responsibility for me, didn't he? So I can confidently say, there is absolutely nothing between him and Cynthia."
"Don't forget, Dominic and I share a daughter. As long as we have her, he'll forgive me for anything. She's my ultimate safety net."
As she spoke, her breathing deliberately grew heavier, mimicking someone struggling to catch their breath.
Her footsteps also began to falter.
She reached out, bracing herself against the hallway wall. "Ah... I have to go. I'm feeling a bit dizzy. I need to lie down for a minute."
She pulled the phone away from her ear, pushed open the door to Lily's room, and stumbled inside.
The door clicked shut behind her.
The corridor fell dead silent once more.
And Dominic would belong to her, and her alone!
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small paper packet, peeling back a corner to reveal the gray-white powder inside.
Thank goodness she had kept a packet for herself.
She gripped the paper tight, shifting her gaze toward the lounge.
Today, she was going to lock Dominic down completely.
He valued emotional bonds above all else, did he?
Once they crossed that physical line, there was no way he could refuse to take responsibility for her.
Cynthia carefully folded the packet, slipped it back into her pocket, and cast one final, venomous look at Lily's bedroom door.
Hmph, Seraphina wasn't going anywhere. But first, Cynthia had some important business to take care of!
Smoothing down her skirt, she turned and strode purposefully toward the lounge...
