With those words, Dominic turned to head inside.
Panic flared in Cynthia's eyes, and she reached out to grab him.
But he was moving too fast; her fingers grasped at empty air.
Stumbling off balance, she pitched forward.
"Watch out!"
Hearing the commotion, Dominic spun around and caught her just in time.
She collapsed against his chest, a picture of fragile vulnerability.
"Are you okay?"
Despite the heavy disappointment weighing on him, he couldn't bring himself to push her away.
"I'm fine..."
She shook her head and made a show of standing up, but as she moved, a folded document slipped from her pocket and fluttered to the ground.
It was a medical report.
Dominic frowned.
Was she sick?
He bent down to pick it up, his grip suddenly tightening on the paper.
It was an ultrasound result.
The paperwork confirmed she was over a month pregnant.
His gaze snapped to hers. "You're pregnant?"
Cynthia rested a hand over her flat stomach. "Yes. The doctor said it's twins—a boy and a girl."
A breathless laugh escaped him, followed immediately by a sharp pang of guilt.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Her eyes welled with tears.
"You've been avoiding me. You wouldn't answer my calls, and security wouldn't let me through the gates... Dominic, I thought you were done with me. How could I say anything?"
"That's why I went abroad. I worked myself to the bone just so that when you needed someone, I could stand by your side instead of watching helplessly."
A storm of conflicting emotions darkened his gaze.
Sniffling, she pressed on. "To improve my skills, I studied the notes of industry leaders. But I swear to you, Dominic, I only used them for inspiration. I never copied anyone's work."
"The Ross family was struggling financially, so I had to work my way through school. I got a terrible gash on my side while prepping food in a restaurant kitchen. It took dozens of stitches. I lay in that hospital room completely alone..."
As she spoke, she lifted the hem of her shirt.
A faded scar marred her otherwise flawless skin, a testament to a severe injury.
A lump formed in his throat as he stared at the mark.
He remembered the girl she used to be, standing beside him with her bright, infectious smile.
She had always been so pure and kindhearted.
How could he dismiss everything she was just because of one report?
Reaching out, he pulled her into a tight embrace. "I'm sorry, Cynthia. It's my fault. I never should have doubted you without getting the full story."
