Gideon glanced at the three thugs groaning on the floor, then back at Seraphina.
Seeing she was largely unhurt, the frosty tension in his brow eased slightly.
"I had people keeping tabs on Cynthia," Chelsea explained. "We caught her brother Caleb hiring muscle to come after you. My detective trailed them, and it turns out the PI actually works for Gideon, so..."
Seraphina's gaze hardened.
Caleb?
Then why had those goons claimed Dominic sent them?
Were they just throwing his name around to frame him?
She stared down at the thugs, her eyes darkening.
"As long as you're safe," Gideon said, his voice a low rumble. "I'll take care of the rest."
Seraphina nodded and pulled out her phone to dial 911.
"I need to report an attempted kidnapping and assault. My location is..."
Ending the call, she turned back to Gideon and Chelsea. "I am going to bury whoever orchestrated this."
Chelsea nodded firmly. "I'm with you all the way."
Gideon gave a curt nod in agreement.
He shot a look at Myles. Understanding instantly, Myles stepped forward and hauled the moaning men to their feet, pinning them down.
...
After sorting out the legal mess with the thugs, Seraphina finally made it back to her apartment.
She had a raw scrape on her arm that burned fiercely.
She quickly cleaned and bandaged the wound, changed into fresh clothes, and collapsed onto her bed, falling into a deep sleep.
She spent the next two days recovering at home. She was on the sofa reviewing paperwork when the doorbell suddenly rang.
Frowning, she got up, walked over, and checked the peephole.
Dominic.
Seraphina's expression soured.
"So he gets to take his mood swings out on me?"
Seraphina's voice rose. "And who is looking out for my wellbeing?"
Dominic scowled.
He shifted tactics, though he remained relentlessly arrogant.
"Just apologize to Cynthia, and we can call it even. Otherwise, I can't guarantee what Caleb might try next."
Seraphina stared at him, staggered by his absolute delusion.
"Never."
She enunciated every word. "If he comes after me again, I will ruin him. Try me."
Dominic's face turned stormy.
"Stop being so vindictive, Seraphina. You killed Cynthia's babies, and now you're trying to lock up her brother. Do you have a shred of conscience left?"
She scoffed loudly. "I hurt her? Which of your useless eyes actually saw me hit her? Her brother hired goons to kidnap me! I'm the victim here, and you want to preach about my conscience? Are you completely psychotic?"
