Tristan frowned, locked his screen, and didn't bother replying.
After wrapping up a long day of work, Seraphina went home, washed up, and was immediately greeted by a ringing phone.
She checked the caller ID. It was an encrypted number, the prefix indicating it was from Blackwood Military Base.
She pressed accept, and a deep, authoritative male voice came through the line: "Hello, Ms. Sinclair. We are calling from The Advanced Defense Tech Initiative. Following multiple high-level recommendations, we are formally extending an invitation for you to join our core research and development team. The classified documents have been sent to your encrypted inbox. Please review them at your earliest convenience."
A bright smile naturally curved onto Seraphina's lips.
"Understood. I accept the invitation."
After hanging up, she opened her email and skimmed through the project brief, her eyes shining with mounting excitement.
She had a few days before she needed to officially report for duty.
Perfect timing to finish the assignments Dean Vance had given her before she left.
She closed the browser and opened several other document files.
They were the complex nuclear research problems Dean Vance had handed her—dozens of pages densely packed with intricate equations.
For the next few days, Seraphina locked herself inside her apartment.
Her desk was buried under mountains of scratch paper, her monitors displayed seven or eight active windows, and her coffee cup was refilled more times than she could count.
Days later, she closed the final page and let out a long, exhausted exhale.
Every single equation was solved.
She brought her findings to The Institute of Nuclear Research, where she was immediately dragged into solving several other critical bottlenecks. The entire team cheered in awe, loudly begging for their senior's autograph.
It took Seraphina quite a while to sign everything before she finally managed to slip away to find Dean Vance.
Dean Vance was sitting at his computer, monitoring the live feed from the experimental sector.
When he saw Seraphina walk in, he couldn't hide the massive grin spreading across his face.
"I saw everything."
He gave her a massive thumbs-up. "You're as brilliant as ever, kiddo."
Seraphina smiled and handed over the completed files. "Professor, I need to tell you something. I'll be joining The Advanced Defense Tech Initiative next, so I'll be gone for a while. I have to put the nuclear research on hold until I get back."
Dean Vance nodded emphatically. "Go! Absolutely, go! That's a national priority, far more important than what we're doing here. Don't worry about us. Just come back whenever you're done."
After finishing the handover, Seraphina returned to her apartment building, only to find a sleek black SUV parked by the curb.
