For the next few days, Seraphina threw herself completely into the defense technology research.
Life at Blackwood Military Base was incredibly fast-paced.
She worked from dawn to dusk, pulling several all-nighters in a row. Finally, she managed to crack the critical bottleneck that had stalled the project team for months.
The team leader gave her a massive thumbs-up. "Comrade Sinclair! You are absolutely incredible!"
Seraphina waved it off modestly. "The subsequent optimization will require all of us working together."
The team leader waved his hand dismissively. "Leave the rest to us! You go get some sleep right now."
Seraphina went back to her quarters and slept for a full twenty-four hours.
When she woke up, it was just in time for the morning run.
She jogged along the track bordering the training field. As she rounded a bend, she bumped into Gideon.
"Morning," he greeted her.
"Morning," Seraphina replied.
"Did you sleep well?" Gideon asked.
"Yeah," she nodded.
"Good. Let's run together then."
The two of them jogged side by side along the track.
As more people trickled onto the field for their morning exercise, they couldn't help but cast curious, admiring glances at the pair.
"Instructor Cole and that girl look like they stepped right out of a movie..."
"I heard she was transferred over from The Institute of Nuclear Research. She's the one who cracked the hardest bottleneck on our project."
"A genius and a commander. Talk about a perfect match."
The two of them kept running, entirely oblivious to the gossip. When they reached the end of the field, they stopped, and Gideon handed her a bottle of water.
Seraphina took a sip, her eyes naturally drifting toward him.
She was used to seeing him in sharp, immaculate business suits, looking cold and ruthless.
But wearing camo, he radiated a completely different, rugged vitality.
She couldn't help but chuckle.
"What is it?" Gideon looked at her.
"Nothing," she said, twisting the cap back on. "The camo looks really good on you."
Gideon's ears instantly flushed red.
He averted his gaze. "I'll wear it more often then."
Seraphina looked down, chuckling again.
