Dominic frowned in confusion.

"We might have been a bit negligent recently..."

"Negligent?"

Seraphina scoffed coldly. "The Lockwoods are supposed to be one of the most elite families in Northport, yet you've somehow managed to give a five-year-old child anemia."

Lily tugged gently on the hem of her shirt, whispering, "Mom, what's anemia?"

Seraphina knelt down and cupped her daughter's cheek.

"It's nothing, sweetie. Mom is here now, I won't let anything bad happen to you."

Lily thought for a moment before adding,

"Mom, Cynthia made me eat plain oatmeal every single day."

Seraphina's eyes widened in horror. She shot up and glared at Dominic.

"Are you even human, Dominic?! Why don't you try surviving on nothing but plain oatmeal every single day!"

Dominic's brow furrowed. His daughter clearly said 'Cynthia,' not him. Why was he the one getting yelled at?

Naturally, he didn't voice this out loud. He averted his gaze slightly.

"Cynthia meant well. Lily's stomach was a little upset, so she had Lucille make her plain oatmeal for a few days. It wasn't every single meal."

Lily immediately pouted in protest.

"It was every single meal! Whenever Cynthia was home, she forced me to eat plain oatmeal. She said if I ate it, I wouldn't have to go to the hospital, and Daddy would like me more."

Seraphina's hands balled into tight fists.

"What a wicked stepmother."

Dominic scowled. "Don't use such ugly words. Cynthia was just looking out for her. Maybe her methods were a bit misguided, but she doesn't have a malicious bone in her body."

Seraphina stared at him, a bitter laugh escaping her lips.

"They really weren't kidding. When a kid gets a wicked stepmother, the biological father turns into a deadbeat."

"You—" Dominic found himself completely at a loss for words.

Seraphina's insults were becoming increasingly ruthless.

Lily wrapped her arms tightly around Seraphina's leg.

"Mom, I don't want a stepmother! I want to go home with you!"

She didn't entirely understand everything the adults were saying, but she absolutely understood the word 'stepmother'. She had heard enough fairy tales to know that stepmothers were always terrible to children. She didn't want one!

Seraphina gently stroked her hair.

"Okay."
