Dominic's voice drifted in from the hallway, laced with exasperation.
"You're completely out of your mind, Seraphina!"
Cynthia's gentle, placating tone followed. "Dominic, let it go... She's in a dark place right now. I completely understand. Let's just come back to see Lily another time."
The sound of their footsteps gradually faded down the corridor.
Seraphina ignored them entirely. She focused on adjusting her daughter's blankets, tucking the edges in securely before gently brushing a stray lock of hair from Lily's forehead.
As her fingertips brushed the girl's skin, she noticed it felt alarmingly cold.
She paused, her gaze instantly darting to the heart monitor beside the bed.
The numbers were wrong.
Her heart rate had plummeted significantly from moments ago, and her oxygen saturation was rapidly dropping.
Seraphina's pupils contracted in pure panic. She slammed the emergency call button. "Doctor! Hurry! Room 521!"
The on-call doctor and a team of nurses burst through the door. The moment the doctor saw the plummeting numbers on the monitor, the blood drained from his face.
"What happened here?" he demanded, his hands already flying to adjust the equipment.
Seraphina spoke rapidly. "People were just in here. I saw them messing with her IV line and the oxygen valve with my own eyes."
The doctor cursed under his breath. "That's absolute insanity! They could have killed her!"
His hands moved in a blur of practiced urgency.
The nurses swarmed the bed, injecting emergency medications, adjusting the ventilator settings, and tracking vital signs as the machines wailed a relentless, terrifying alarm.
Seraphina stood backed into the corner, watching her daughter be resuscitated once again. Her heart physically ached with the terror of it.
She had been too careless...
She gripped the hem of her shirt, consumed by an unbearable, suffocating anxiety.
Finally, agonizingly slowly, the numbers on the monitor began to climb. The heart rate stabilized, and the oxygen levels returned to the safety zone.
The doctor stood up straight, letting out a massive sigh of relief as he wiped a sheen of sweat from his forehead.
"She's stabilized for now."
