"Much better." Old Mrs. Lockwood patted the back of her hand. "But look at you, child. You've lost weight."

She studied Seraphina's face, her eyes filled with maternal ache. "I wanted to keep you longer at the hospital last time, but you left in such a hurry."

Seraphina offered a warm smile. "I've been doing great. Please don't worry about me."

While the two of them chatted, the relatives from Westwood were openly staring at Seraphina.

One of them, a man in his fifties with a rugged, tanned face, studied her for a long time before suddenly gasping.

"Are you... the Sinclair girl?"

Seraphina turned toward the voice, her eyes landing on his weathered, square face.

It had aged significantly since her memories of him, but the core features were identical.

"Uncle Barnaby?"

She called out tentatively.

Barnaby's face broke into a massive, wrinkled grin. "Ha! It really is you! Look how much you've grown!"

He looked her up and down, his eyes shining with pure nostalgia.

"When you were little, you lived in Westwood with your parents for a couple of years. Back then, you were only this tall."

He gestured somewhere around his waist.

Seraphina's memories slowly started piecing themselves together.

Back then, she had stayed in Westwood with the Sinclair family for a stretch. The villagers always fondly called her the 'Sinclair girl.'

Barnaby lived near the village entrance and used to pick sweet melons from his garden for her during the summer.

"We saw that news feature about you back in the village!" Barnaby exclaimed. "The one about your scientific research, the really impressive stuff. Everyone was absolutely thrilled. We all kept saying the Sinclair girl has really made a name for herself!"

Seraphina waved it off modestly. "It's just my job."

"That's no simple job!" Barnaby gave her a vigorous thumbs-up. "The young folks in the village pulled it up on their phones to show us. They said you got published in leading scientific journals. That's incredible!"

They chatted back and forth for a few more minutes until Dominic and Cynthia walked over to join the circle.
