Barnaby frowned at her, the warmth instantly vanishing from his weathered face.
"Ross girl, what kind of nonsense are you spewing?"
His tone hardened with undisguised irritation. "It was undeniably the Sinclair girl who ran to get us. When she reached us, she was soaked to the bone, and the gash on her leg was oozing blood everywhere. I personally held pressure on the wound to stop the bleeding while her dad ripped a strip of cloth to bandage it."
He paused, locking eyes with her. "As for you? You were wearing a pink dress that day, standing on the bank without a single drop of water on you. You had a lifesaver in your hands. Your dad was an excellent swimmer. If you genuinely wanted to save them, you could have tossed the lifesaver in, or begged your dad to jump in and fish them out. But you did neither. Instead, you held onto your dad for dear life and refused to let him help."
Barnaby didn't pull a single punch. "So how exactly did you magically become the savior today?"
"What a load of utter rubbish."
Dominic's pupils shrank to pinpricks.
He stared fixedly at Seraphina's lower leg.
The hem of her black dress stopped just below the knee, revealing a glimpse of her pale, elegant calves.
But Dominic had seen that exact scar before.
Right now, every single word tumbling out of Barnaby's mouth was perfectly aligning that scar with his traumatic childhood memories of drowning.
Dominic's voice was so hoarse he could barely speak. "You..."
He whipped his head around to stare at Cynthia.
Cynthia's face was as white as a sheet of paper.
Her lips trembled violently as she frantically tried to maintain her composure. "Uncle Barnaby is getting on in years, his memory is slipping! I was clearly the one who saved you that day! Why are you all believing his crazy story over mine?"
A collective gasp rippled through the guests. It was glaringly obvious that absolutely no one believed her.
Just then, a chaotic patter of quick footsteps echoed from the entrance of the banquet hall.
"Mom!"
A bright, childish voice sliced through the murmuring crowd.
