Her words hung in the air, leaving a heavy silence in the hospital room.
Dominic said nothing.
Cynthia kept her face turned away. Her eyelashes fluttered downward, and her shoulders remained stiff with tension.
After a long moment, she took a shaky breath.
"Forget it."
She turned back to face him, her expression shifting back to its usual composed, detached state.
"Focus on your work. I shouldn't be making a fuss."
Her tone was calm, as though she had genuinely let it go, but the casual dismissal only made her previous grievances feel that much heavier.
Dominic's brow furrowed as he watched her put up this brave front.
He reached out and covered her hand with his again.
"Cynthia."
She lifted her eyes.
"It's my fault," his voice dropped an octave. "I've been neglecting you lately, and I apologize."
Her eyes grew even redder, but she refused to let the tears fall, simply giving a delicate sniff and looking down.
"You don't need to apologize. I know you're busy."
"Being busy is no excuse." Dominic's frown deepened. "I'll have someone follow up on the wedding dress. Everything will proceed as planned."
His promise felt like a reassurance for her, but also a reminder to himself.
Their youthful romance had finally reached its destination. Despite everything that had happened along the way, this was the love of his youth...
Yet, for some inexplicable reason, the moment the words left his mouth, Seraphina's image flashed vividly in his mind.
Cynthia's fingers twitched against his palm, snapping him back to reality.
She looked at him with a mix of grievance, endurance, and the quiet relief of a woman who had finally been pacified.
"Dominic," she murmured softly. "I don't want to fight with you. I'm just... terrified that you don't want me anymore."
He gave her a long, complicated look.
He remembered the years she had been gone, remembered holding up the Lockwood empire all on his own, and remembered that when she finally returned, she was at least willing to stand by his side.
He reached out and pulled her into his embrace.
Cynthia rested her face against his chest, looping her arms around his waist.
