An indescribable wave of emotion washed over her.
"You're here?" Hearing the door, Gideon opened his eyes and handed her the strawberries. "Just bought these. Eat up."
She took them. "Thank you."
He glanced at her, a soft smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
Seraphina gradually grew accustomed to being cared for like this.
She even started looking forward to that morning text and the fresh fruit waiting for her.
She knew she shouldn't feel this way—Gideon was just doing her a favor—but every time she saw him waiting downstairs, her heart softened a little.
She stopped refusing his rides, stopped turning down the things he bought her, and even started initiating texts to ask if he had eaten when she knew he was busy.
Gideon would stare at his screen and smile whenever those messages popped up.
Then he would reply: I did. What about you?
She would text back: I ate.
When they had a free moment, they would chat.
Gideon was never one for idle conversation, but with Seraphina, time always seemed to fly by.
Compared to the peaceful warmth of Seraphina's life, things at the Lockwood estate were a completely different story.
Ever since Cynthia was discharged from the hospital, she clung to Dominic like a shadow.
When he went to work, she followed him to the office.
When he had meetings, she waited in his suite.
When he went to business dinners, she sat right beside him.
At first, Dominic tolerated it, figuring she was still recovering and deciding not to make an issue of it.
But as the days dragged on, an inexplicable sense of suffocation began to build inside him.
Especially when he saw her sitting in his office, his brows would unconsciously furrow.
He didn't even know where this irritation was coming from.
When Cynthia had been gone, he missed her day and night. Now that she was in front of him 24/7, he felt like he couldn't breathe.
This morning, Cynthia followed him into his office yet again, carrying a thermos of soup.
Dominic unbuttoned his suit jacket, sat in his chair, and rubbed his temples.
"Cynthia, you should go home and rest today."
