The moment the metal sliced into Dominic's back, a muffled groan escaped his lips.
Yet his arms clamped down even tighter, pressing Seraphina flush against his chest to shield her completely.
Her ears were ringing, and the sharp copper scent of blood filled her nose.
She pushed against his chest. "Let go."
He looked down at her. "Are you hurt?"
She frowned. "I'm fine, but your back is bleeding."
Only then did he loosen his grip slightly. He glanced over his shoulder, noticing the massive patch of crimson soaking through his shirt.
"It's just a scratch," he said, his voice heavy.
His assistant sprinted over, pale as a ghost. "Mr. Lockwood, your back..."
"Enough. Go find out what the hell just happened."
Seraphina stared at the gash on his back, her tone freezing over. "You're hurt worse than I am. Go to the hospital."
He paused, clearly surprised she was showing even a fraction of concern for him.
"Come with me."
"I have my own car."
"Come with me," he repeated, his tone leaving absolutely no room for argument.
Seraphina lazily broke eye contact. She couldn't be bothered to argue with him and started walking toward the parking lot.
He followed closely behind, his steps slightly unsteady. The assistant quickly grabbed his arm to support him.
Cynthia was still sprawled on the pavement.
She stared at his retreating back, her pupils contracting into pinpricks.
"Dominic..."
He cast a brief glance over his shoulder. "Cynthia, Seraphina is hurt, so I'm taking her to the hospital. I'll have my driver take you home, and I'll send a private physician over to look at your wound."
After giving the orders to his assistant, he turned back around.
Initially, Seraphina had zero intention of riding in the same car as him, but now she was absolutely going to.
Watching Cynthia eat dirt was simply too satisfying.
Normally, she despised wasting time on garbage people. She had zero interest in tangling herself up with cheaters and homewreckers.
But Cynthia wasn't just garbage; she was an enemy!
This woman had tried to ruin her life on multiple occasions, and worse, she had targeted her daughter.
When it came to enemies, Seraphina was more than happy to twist the knife.
Honestly, Dominic was absolute trash. When she was his wife, he had frozen her out for another woman.
Now that they were divorced, he was ignoring his supposed "true love" to play the hero for her.
It was laughably pathetic.
But as much of a scumbag as he was, using him to infuriate Cynthia was a delightful bonus.
She threw one last highly provocative glance at the woman bleeding on the ground before stepping into Dominic's car.
Cynthia's fingers dug violently into the asphalt.
She watched him get into the car. She watched Seraphina slide in right beside him.
The doors clicked shut, and the vehicle peeled away.
She was left kneeling on the concrete, the blood from her forehead dripping steadily off her chin.
A sickening wave of déjà vu washed over her.
