"Explain what?" Dominic replied calmly. "She's hurt, so I'm looking after her for a bit."
Cynthia's fingers curled into tight fists.
"You're looking after her? Dominic, you two are already divorced."
Dominic found the accusation absurd.
"So what if we're divorced? She's in the hospital alone. I can't just leave her be."
Cynthia's chest heaved, her voice trembling with suppressed fury.
"What about me? I'm hurt too."
Dominic stared at her and took a deep breath.
"Cynthia, you have doctors at home, you have people taking care of you. She's different."
"How is she different?" Cynthia stepped forward. "Dominic, did you forget that I'm your fiancée?"
Seraphina frowned.
She had absolutely no interest in listening to them bicker here.
"If you're going to fight, take it outside. This is a hospital room, not your living room."
Dominic shot her a glance, his expression softening.
"You get some rest. I'll be right outside."
He grabbed Cynthia's arm and pulled a highly reluctant Cynthia out of the room.
The door clicked shut.
Leaning against the headboard, Seraphina could hear Cynthia's hushed, furious voice drifting from the hallway.
"Dominic, what is the meaning of this?"
Dominic's voice dropped low as well.
"Cynthia, stop making a scene."
"I'm making a scene? You were tending to her right in front of me, pouring her water, feeding her fruit, and you're telling me not to make a scene?"
Dominic took a sharp breath, keeping his voice down.
"She's a divorced woman raising a child on her own, it hasn't been easy for her. She's Lily's mother, I can't just turn a blind eye."
Cynthia's voice cracked with a hint of a sob.
"Then what about me? Where do I fit into all this?"
