It had been a long time since she visited the ocean.
The last time was back in college with Chelsea. Back then, she still had dreams and believed that anything was possible in the future.
Seraphina pulled her gaze away and parked the car in the lot.
As soon as she stepped out, she spotted Dominic.
The man was dressed in sleek black athletic gear, standing by the registration desk with two bottles of water in his hand, looking in her direction.
Seraphina expressionlessly averted her gaze.
Lily was already running over to him.
"Dad!"
Dominic crouched down, handed her a bottle of water, and glanced at Seraphina. "Did Mom get some water?"
Lily shook her head and turned to shout, "Mom! Dad got you water!"
Seraphina walked over, took the water from Dominic's hand without making eye contact, and spoke directly to Lily. "Let's go sign in first."
The three of them walked to the registration desk to complete their paperwork for The Family Cycling Event.
Today's event featured two categories: a team race and a solo race. The team event was family-based, requiring groups of three, with the final time recorded when the last member crossed the finish line. The solo race was open to all ages and genders, timed individually. Both events offered prize money—five thousand dollars for the team champions and three thousand dollars for the solo winner.
When Lily heard the announcement over the loudspeaker, her eyes lit up.
"Mom! There's prize money! I want to ride! I want to win the money!"
Seraphina couldn't help but laugh; this kid was definitely a little penny-pincher.
She glanced at the registration desk, where parents ahead of them were already filling out forms.
Seraphina looked down at her. "Are you sure? You only have a shot at the prize if you finish the entire course in the team race."
"I can do it!"
Seeing the fierce determination in her daughter's eyes, Seraphina nodded.
Lily cheered excitedly and immediately ran over to ask Dominic.
Dominic nodded in agreement as well.
Overjoyed, Lily dragged Seraphina over to sign the paperwork.
They reached the desk, picked up a pen, and wrote all three of their names on the family team registration form.
