A sudden, inexplicable sense of unease settled over Dominic.

He backed out of the chat with Seraphina, opened his daughter's smartwatch messaging app, and sent a voice note: "Lily, I'm coming with you on the hike tomorrow. Do you have everything ready?"

After sending it, he stared at the screen for a long time.

No read receipt.

No reply.

Dominic placed the phone face down on the table, his frown deepening.

Cynthia watched all of this unfold.

She took a deep breath, keeping her voice warm. "Dominic."

He turned to look at her.

"Tomorrow is Monday. Let's go get our marriage license."

Dominic's brow furrowed slightly.

"I have plans tomorrow."

The smile on Cynthia's face stiffened for a moment.

"Dominic, my belly is getting bigger by the day. If we drag this out any longer, I won't look good in a wedding dress."

Dominic took a shallow breath.

"It's just a day or two. It won't delay anything."

Cynthia wanted to argue, but seeing the sharp, imposing set of Dominic's jaw, she swallowed her words.

She couldn't push him too hard.

Pushing too hard would only cause a rift.

She switched back to a gentle expression and looped her arm through his. "Alright, then come home with me tonight, okay? You've been out of town for days."

Dominic glanced down at his phone.

The screen remained dark.

Seraphina hadn't replied.

Lily hadn't replied either.

That nagging unease crept back up inside him.

He shook his head. "I just got back today, and I'm a bit tired. I'll make time for you in a few days."

The fury inside Cynthia flared up again.

But outwardly, she kept smiling.

"Alright. Make sure you get some rest."

When the banquet ended, Cynthia stood at the hotel entrance as the night breeze blew past.

She looked at Dominic. "Dominic, take me home."
