Inside the bedroom, the lighting was a warm, soft yellow.
Lily hugged her little pillow, leaning against the edge of Seraphina's bed. "Mom, is Dad really not going tomorrow?"
Seraphina looked down into her daughter's big, dark eyes, forcing down the lingering annoyance in her heart. "Dad is busy. Mom will go with you tomorrow."
Lily pursed her little lips, clearly disappointed.
She looked down, picking at the corner of her pillow, and muttered, "But all the other kids have their moms and dads going together..."
Seraphina looked at the crown of her daughter's head, her heart softening.
She reached out and pulled her closer. "Next time there's an activity, you can ask Dad to go with you."
Hearing that, Lily immediately threw herself into Seraphina's arms, wrapping her little arms tightly around her waist. "No, I still want you to go with me. Let Dad stay busy."
Seraphina was momentarily stunned.
She understood exactly what Lily meant. She wanted both her mom and dad to attend, but if she had to choose only one, she would choose her mom without hesitation.
Seraphina looked at the soft little girl in her arms and stroked her hair.
Just then, a knock came from the door.
Seraphina's expression instantly turned frosty.
Lily heard it too. She pulled back from Seraphina's embrace and glanced toward the door.
She whispered, "Is that Dad?"
Seraphina didn't answer. She simply set her files down on the nightstand.
Lily slid off the bed, shuffled over in her little slippers, and cracked the door open slightly.
Dominic stood in the hallway, still wearing his black overcoat, clearly having just arrived from outside.
Seeing his daughter, his tone softened. "Lily, Dad's here."
Lily blocked the doorway, refusing to let him in.
She looked up with a serious expression and asked, "Dad, did you make Mom mad?"
Dominic's brow furrowed slightly. "What?"
"Mom said we don't need you to come with us tomorrow. You definitely made her mad."
Dominic's face darkened.
He took a breath, trying his best to coax her patiently. "Lily, can you go inside and put in a good word for Dad with Mom?"
Lily shook her head.
She stared at him solemnly. "You need to think very hard about what you did wrong. Come back when you figure it out."
With that, she pushed the door shut with her little hands.
Dominic stood outside, staring at the closed door, his face completely livid.
Inside, Lily turned and scurried back to the bed, climbing up and burrowing straight into Seraphina's arms.
Seraphina watched her swift sequence of actions and couldn't help but let out an amused scoff. "When did you get so smart?"
Lily hugged her waist tightly. "If Dad didn't make you mad, you wouldn't tell him not to come."
Seraphina's movements paused.
She looked down at her daughter, suddenly realizing that this child was actually highly perceptive.
