"Got it. Don't worry," Chelsea assured her.
Seraphina hung up and set her phone aside.
She looked down at her daughter and reached over to pull the covers up a little higher.
The night settled into complete quiet.
Seraphina closed her eyes.
She took a deep breath.
She still had to take Lily hiking tomorrow.
She turned off the lamp, lay down, and pulled her daughter securely into her arms.
A night of dreamless sleep.
Outside the apartment, Dominic stood there for a very long time.
There wasn't a single sound coming from inside.
Seraphina never opened the door.
Lily never came running back out.
He stared at the tightly shut door, his face turning pale and livid by turns.
He raised his hand, wanting to knock one more time.
But as his knuckles grazed the wood, he stopped.
What would knocking accomplish anyway?
Seraphina wouldn't open it.
She wouldn't even reply to his messages.
He sighed. It would be better to just show up early tomorrow morning to meet them.
Dominic lowered his hand and turned toward the elevators.
The motion-sensor lights in the hallway clicked off.
His silhouette was swallowed by the dimness.
The elevator doors parted, and he stepped inside.
The mirrored walls reflected his grim face, his expression laced with absolute frustration.
The chauffeur had taken Cynthia home.
He had to drive himself.
The underground garage was desolate and empty.
Dominic walked to his car, pulled the door open, slid in, and drove out of the basement.
The night wind whipped in through his half-open window.
But his mind was growing more chaotic by the second.
One moment it was Lily's voice saying, "You need to think very hard about what you did wrong."
The next, it was the image of Seraphina hunched over in the factory, meticulously correcting data.
Dominic gripped the steering wheel tightly and hit the gas.
The car merged onto the main road, heading into the bustling district.
Neon lights blurred past the window.
He reached for his phone, desperate to see if Seraphina had replied.
Just as the screen lit up, a call came through.
Cynthia.
The car's Bluetooth picked it up automatically.
"Where are you?"
Cynthia's voice was freezing.
Dominic kept his eyes on the road. "Driving."
"On what road?"
"Is there a problem?"
Cynthia went silent for two seconds.
"You went to Seraphina's."
Dominic's eyes darkened.
