She blindly patted around for her phone. Without even opening her eyes, she swiped to answer.
"Seraphina..."
Dominic's low, gravelly voice drifted out of the speaker.
Before her brain even fully woke up, her temper flared.
"Shut up! Are you out of your mind?! Why do you always call when people are trying to sleep..."
The man on the other end paused before immediately launching into a panicked explanation.
"Seraphina, I didn't mean to wake you. I just wanted to transfer a few million dollars to you and Lily..."
Before he could finish.
"I don't need it!"
Seraphina snapped her phone shut, rolled over, and buried her face in the pillow.
Dominic stared at his disconnected phone, his eyes burning.
It had taken him far too long to realize that Seraphina had never cared about his money.
Over the past six years, she had never once asked him for a dime.
She had never asked for a single piece of jewelry.
She had never asked for a designer bag.
All she ever did was spend her days in the kitchen making him soup, hanging laundry out on the balcony, and waiting for him to come home late at night.
Yet when it came to buying a multimillion-dollar mansion for Cynthia, he hadn't even blinked.
Dominic lowered his head. It felt like something heavy was lodged in his throat—he couldn't swallow it down, and he couldn't spit it out.
...
The next morning.
When Seraphina woke up, the memory of that late-night call resurfaced, and she couldn't help but mutter again, "Psycho."
She gathered her thoughts, got up, dropped Lily off at school, and started her drive to work.
Halfway there, she received a call from the factory. A minor glitch had popped up in the second-generation caregiving robot, and they needed her to take a look.
She agreed, pulling a U-turn at the next intersection to head out toward the suburbs.
As she was driving down a quiet stretch of road in the industrial park, she spotted two people standing by the shoulder up ahead.
One of them was Cynthia.
Seraphina instinctively slowed down.
Cynthia was wearing a dark gray trench coat. Standing across from her was a man in a black baseball cap. He had the brim pulled down so low it obscured his face entirely.
They stood a half-step apart, clearly locked in conversation.
Cynthia's face was as cold as ever. Her lips moved rapidly, her tone seemingly urgent.
