She had assumed that after yesterday's humiliation, Dominic wouldn't show his face again.
Yet, to her surprise, he reappeared at the door of her hospital room the very next afternoon.
This time, he didn't bring food. Instead, he carried a basket of fresh fruit.
"Seraphina, are you feeling any better today?"
Seraphina looked up at him, her brows instantly knitting together in annoyance.
"Why are you here again?"
Dominic set the fruit on the table. His expression was as composed as ever, though his tone was noticeably softer than usual.
"I was passing by the hospital and thought I'd drop in to check on your recovery."
"I was doing perfectly fine."
Seraphina snapped her book shut, glaring at him coldly.
"But now that I'm looking at you, I suddenly feel terrible again."
Dominic stiffened.
Seraphina wasn't joking in the slightest. She pressed on, "Dominic, could you stop hovering around me? As long as you stay out of sight, everything about me is great—my health, my mood, everything."
"If you genuinely want me to recover quickly, then stop bothering me."
Dominic stared at her in a daze.
He had never imagined that there would come a day when his mere presence would thoroughly disgust Seraphina.
In the past, even if he only made a rare appearance at home, she would happily rush over to greet him.
But now, when he actively sought her out, all she wanted was for him to leave as fast as possible.
Dominic's lips parted slightly, as if he wanted to say more, but seeing the undisguised repulsion in Seraphina's eyes, he swallowed the words back down.
"Get some rest."
He murmured the words, then turned and left.
Seraphina didn't respond. She reopened her book, completely indifferent to his departure.
...
Two days later.
Seraphina's body had mostly recovered. After a final check-up, the doctor cleared her for discharge.
Gideon arrived personally to pick her up.
The man gathered her belongings and carefully reviewed the doctor's instructions before walking her out of the hospital.
"Make sure you get plenty of rest once you're back. The research institute's work can wait a day or two."
"I know, Mr. Cole."
Seraphina replied with a light laugh.
