That day, due to the requirements of her research project, Seraphina needed to head back to the outskirts of town to collect a batch of raw materials.
She had mapped out the entire itinerary, but right before she left, Gideon suddenly showed up.
"I'm going with you."
Seraphina blinked, then let out a helpless laugh.
"Don't you have work today? I'm just gathering some samples, it's nothing dangerous. I can manage on my own."
"That's what you said last time."
Gideon's tone brokered no argument. "And look how that turned out."
Seraphina was instantly silenced.
Thinking back to her previous near-death experience, she knew Gideon was just worried about her. She nodded in agreement.
Gideon's lips curved upward as he seamlessly took the heavy toolkit from her hands.
"Let's go."
The two drove out to the countryside. Following her pre-planned route, Seraphina observed the environment while carefully extracting the right materials.
Gideon stayed right by her side, occasionally handing her tools without interfering with her focus.
However, it didn't take long for Seraphina to notice a familiar figure lingering behind them.
Dominic.
The moment she spotted him, the smile vanished from her face.
This man was like a lingering ghost.
Ever since she had bluntly rejected him in her neighborhood, she assumed he would have finally developed some self-awareness. She never expected him to stalk her all the way out here.
Dominic seemed to realize he wasn't welcome. He didn't approach them, choosing instead to maintain a distance of several yards, shadowing them silently.
Seraphina couldn't be bothered to entertain his madness and refocused on her work.
But before she could finish collecting her samples, the bright sky rapidly darkened.
Moments later, heavy drops of rain began to plummet from the clouds.
"It's raining."
Gideon pulled a compact umbrella from his backpack, snapping it open to shield Seraphina.
"Let's head back. You can collect the rest another day."
Seraphina glanced at her nearly full sample bag and nodded.
