Seraphina's fingers twitched slightly.
Meadowbrook Academy.
How long had it been since she last heard that name?
It was the place where she had dutifully dropped off and picked up Lily for over two years, rain or shine.
Hearing it now felt like a lifetime ago.
The car soon arrived at the kindergarten.
It was dismissal time. The entrance was packed with cars, parents chatting in small groups as teachers led the kids out one by one.
As Seraphina got out of the car, her gaze instinctively drifted toward the senior class building.
That was the window she used to stare at every day, waiting for Lily to run out.
Her eyes lingered there for two seconds before she pulled them away.
She didn't see anything.
She didn't know if her daughter had been discharged, or how she'd been doing these past few days.
During her time in the hospital, Lily's room had been right down the hall, yet the girl hadn't visited once.
Seraphina hadn't gone over there either.
Chelsea was already heading toward the junior class hallway, waving her over. "Come on, Toby's class is right over here."
Seraphina shook off her thoughts and hurried after her.
Outside the junior classroom, a teacher was leading a little boy out.
He looked about three or four, fair-skinned and wearing a small blue vest. He was looking around eagerly until he spotted Chelsea, instantly breaking free from his teacher's grip and bolting over to wrap his arms around her legs.
"Mom!"
Seraphina looked into those crystal-clear eyes, her lips curving into a warm smile. "Okay, I'll come tomorrow too."
Chelsea stood nearby, hands on her hips, laughing. "Alright, you little traitor. You get a godmother and suddenly your real mom is chopped liver?"
Toby giggled, burying his face back into Seraphina's chest.
Seraphina kept smiling, but her eyes couldn't help drifting back toward the senior class wing.
The hallway was empty, most of the kids already gone. There was still no sign of Lily.
She looked away, turned around, and followed Chelsea back toward the parking lot.
The little guy refused to let her go, and Seraphina didn't mind holding him, though her knees were beginning to ache. She bounced him lightly as she walked, making him burst into fits of giggles.
Chelsea reached out to take him, but Toby twisted away, wrapping his arms even tighter around Seraphina's neck.
Chelsea shook her head with a helpless laugh. "You're doomed. You're never getting rid of him now."
