Chapter 12
Paul felt an uncomfortable tingling across his scalp. “Mr. Goodman, I swear, I’m not interested in Mrs. Goodman. I was merely stating facts,” he said quickly, hoping to clear the air.
“Go on,” Titus urged, his tone calm but expectant.
Realizing there was no easy escape, Paul hesitated before listing off, “She comes from a respectable family, she’s beautiful, and her personality is wonderful.”
Titus raised an eyebrow, pushing further, “Is that what you call ‘good’?”
Paul bit his tongue, wanting to retort, *If she’s not good, why did you marry her? You know exactly the kind of person she is.* But after years of working under Titus, he knew better than to say that aloud. Instead, he softened his words, “She’s been genuinely loyal to you for over ten years. That kind of devotion is hard to find.”
As expected, Titus fell silent, his gaze drifting out the window as if lost in some distant thought.
Paul exhaled quietly, relief washing over him. *That was close. Definitely keeping my mouth shut next time. No more chances.*
Meanwhile, Chiara was leaving the office to assist Heather with a contract. As she stepped out through the company gates, bending over her bag to find her car keys, a familiar voice called out, “Chiara!”
She looked up instinctively.
“It really is you!” the man said, his face lighting up with a broad smile.
At first, Chiara was momentarily puzzled, but recognition soon blossomed, and a warm smile spread across her face. “Wayne!”
Wayne Pierce grinned back and approached. “Yep, that’s me. Can’t believe you still remember me—flattered, honestly.”
Wayne had been a great help to Chiara during their college days, and she had always appreciated his kindness.
His playful teasing made her cheeks flush slightly. She tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “Stop teasing me, Wayne.”
He smiled charmingly, glancing toward the Lynch Group building. “So, what brings you here?”
“I’ve been shadowing Heather lately, learning the ropes,” Chiara replied.
Wayne nodded knowingly. “I thought you’d be home, playing the perfect wife now that you’re married.”
Chiara simply smiled, choosing to remain silent. Her marriage wasn’t a secret, but the identity of her husband was something she kept close to her chest.
Rumors swirled—some speculated she wasn’t truly married, or worse, that she was just a kept woman of some wealthy man. So she preferred to keep the details private.
People spoke as if they knew everything, but Chiara never cared to listen.
“What about you? What brings you here, Wayne?”
“I have a meeting with Ms. Heather Lynch,” he replied.
“Oh, you’re the client Heather mentioned? She asked me to deliver the contract,” Chiara said.
Wayne smiled. “Looks like it.”
They exchanged friendly glances, and after a brief pause, Wayne pulled out his phone. “Since you’re part of the company now, how about we connect on WhatsApp?”
Chiara nodded and retrieved her phone. “Sure.”
They leaned in close to exchange contacts, unaware of the car parked nearby, silently observing the entire scene.
Paul couldn’t believe his luck—he had just pulled up at the perfect moment.
Compared to Titus’s tense demeanor, Chiara appeared completely composed. Paul realized his earlier comment had clearly backfired.
Titus shot him a sharp look. “Devoted to me for a decade, huh?”
Paul swallowed nervously. “Actually, it’s the eleventh year now.”
“Shut up,” Titus snapped, his eyes fixed coldly on Wayne and Chiara as his fingers drummed impatiently on his tablet.
At that moment, Wayne ruffled Chiara’s hair playfully, and she responded with a shy, blushing smile. Titus’s hand clenched into a fist, a sudden surge of irritation flooding him.
