Chapter 136 It’s My Fault

Chapter 136 It’s My Fault

As soon as Chiara sensed someone nearby, she grabbed the nurse’s arm. “What happened to my grandpa? Why did this happen all of a sudden?”

The nurse didn’t know what was happening either, and Chiara’s grip was tight and painful, but she could only soothe her in a gentle voice.

“Mrs. Goodman, please try to stay calm. We’ll know what’s going on once the doctor comes out. I’ll stay with you, the nurse said softly.

Chiara held onto the nurse’s arm, closed her eyes, and took a few deep breaths. Her face was still pale, and her voice

trembled.

“I’m sorry, I…” Chiara stammered.

“It’s alright, Mrs. Goodman. I’ll accompany you,” the nurse said softly.

“Okay…” Chiara murmured.

Chiara leaned against the wall, her gaze locked on the emergency room’s lights and door, unblinking.

The nurse kept urging her to sit and wait, but Chiara remained unresponsive, standing there as if she were carved from

stone.

When Heather arrived and saw Chiara looking completely out of it, her brows knitted in worry.

“Chiara!” Heather exclaimed.

At the sound of Heather’s voice, Chiara finally snapped out of her daze. She turned to look at Heather, tears threatening to spill over.

“Heather…” Chiara choked out.

Heather’s heart ached for her. She wrapped her arms around Chiara, gently soothing her and rubbing her back.

“It’s alright, Chiara. I’m here for you. Don’t be afraid, I’m right here,” Heather whispered softly.

Chiara held onto Heather tightly, her voice shaking. “I have no idea what happened. He was totally fine just now. I only stepped away for a minute to wash some fruit, that’s all. Heather, I really don’t know what went wrong…”

As a terrifying thought crossed her mind, Chiara’s face went even paler, as if she might disappear right then and there.

Heather’s heart skipped a beat. “Don’t overthink it, Chiara. We’ll know what’s going on once the doctor comes out. Don’t scare yourself, okay?”

Chiara bit her lip and shook her head, her voice trembling. “I think it’s my fault…I told Grandpa I was pregnant, and that’s why this happened…”

Heather’s brows furrowed, her tone gentle but firm. “No, Chiara. Don’t blame yourself. That’s not it, okay?”

“Come on, just sit and wait,” Heather urged softly.

Chiara shook her head, her eyes fixed once more on the emergency room door.

Heather frowned, her eyes landing on Chiara’s belly.

“Don’t forget, you’re pregnant!” Heather said, her tone firm.

Chiara’s eyes widened, and she quickly put her hands over her belly.

Heather let out a sigh and dragged her to a chair in the hallway.

“Sit down. I’ll watch the door,” Heather told her.

Every second dragged on, feeling endless. Finally, the emergency room door swung open.

Heather didn’t rush forward. She turned and helped Chiara to her feet, and together, the sisters approached.

Chiara’s voice trembled as she asked, “Doctor, how’s my grandpa?”

The doctor just shook his head at the sisters.

Chiara couldn’t hold back anymore. She grabbed the doctor’s collar, her voice cracking with desperation. “Why are you shaking your head? What does that mean? Tell me!”

“Chiara, take a breath. Let the doctor speak,” H Successfully unlocked! ut firm.

“Mrs. Goodman, Mr. Lynch had been recovering pretty well, but we und wann the family that he should avoid getting angry or having any strong emotional reactions…” the doctor explained.

“Getting angry? Strong emotions?” Heather repeated, still confused.

“Yes. Mr. Lynch has already had two brain surgeries, so his brain and nerves are extremely fragile. This time, it was an acute cerebral hemorrhage. We managed to clear the blood clot quickly, but he’s really quite old now, so whether or not he’ll pull through this critical period…it’s hard to say,” the doctor informed, his tone heavy.

Chiara was completely frozen in place.

‘Getting angry? That doesn’t make any sense…’ Chiara thought, unable to wrap her head around it.

‘Grandpa was so happy before I left. How could this happen?’ she wondered, totally lost.

Heather’s expression shifted, but she managed to keep her composure, clenching her fists as she spoke calmly.

“Doctor, do you think there’s any chance my grandpa will wake up?” Heather asked, her voice steady but tense.

The doctor shook his head. “I’m sorry, but this time, we really can’t promise anything.”

Heather’s heart sank. She was about to say something, but out of nowhere, Chiara suddenly darted off.

Heather froze for a second, then called out, “Chiara, where are you going?”

“Ms. Lynch, we’ll be moving Mr. Lynch to the ICU soon. For now, no visitors are allowed,” the doctor said.

Heather closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “Alright, thanks for letting me know.”

With that, she glanced at the emergency room door and then turned to leave, walking away quickly.

Chiara burst out of the elevator and dashed back to her hospital room. Her eyes scanned the place frantically until they landed on her phone on the floor.

She rushed over, crouched down, and picked it up. The moment her eyes caught sight of the photo, she froze. Her gaze was glued to the screen, and shock was written all over her face.

[So what if everyone knows you’re Mrs. Goodman? Titus will never leave me, not in a million years. You’ll never come out on top!] A message read.

Chiara’s eyes went red, her grip on the phone so tight it looked like she might crush it. Fury and hatred flashed in her gaze, her blood boiling. Suddenly, everything went dark and she crumpled to the floor, completely limp.

Heather burst through the door just in time to see Chiara collapse to the floor.

“Chiara!” Heather screamed.

Heather caught Chiara in her arms, worry etched all over her face. “Chiara, what’s wrong? Please, don’t do this to me. Don’t scare me like this! What’s happening?”

Tears kept streaming down Chiara’s face, her vision a blur. She gripped her phone tightly in one hand, clutching Heather’s hand with the other, desperate for comfort.

“Heather, it’s all my fault. I’m such an idiot, I really am!” Chiara sobbed, her voice cracking.

Heather’s heart lurched. She quickly held Chiara’s face in her hands, panic in her voice. “What happened? Tell me, what’s going on?”

Pain and regret flashed in Chiara’s eyes as she clung to Heather’s arm, her whole body trembling.

“It’s all my fault! I made Grandpa sick. It’s all because of me! I’m so stupid, so stupid!” Chiara wailed, her guilt pouring out. Heather’s face turned pale as she stared at Chiara’s anguished, frantic expression. She couldn’t help glancing at the phone clutched in Chiara’s hand.

“Give me the phone,” Heather said, her voice steady but urgent.

But Chiara just gripped it even tighter, refusing to let go.

Heather frowned and spoke softly to comfort her. “Chiara, please, give the phone to me.”

At last, Chiara loosened her grip, but it was like all her strength left her at once. She collapsed backward, fainting right into Heather’s arms.

Heather forgot all about the phone and caught Chiara just in time, holding her tight so she wouldn’t fall.
