Chapter 137 Condolences

Chapter 137 Condolences

Adele glanced at Charlie. “Call him.”

Just as Charlie was about to dial, Yves spoke up. “I already tried. His phone’s off.”

Both Adele and Charlie froze. “Off?”

Yves lowered his head and gave a small nod.

Debby’s expression soured even more, and she banged her cane hard against the floor.

“Some son you two raised!” Debby snapped.

“Yves, come here. Take your grandma to Chiara’s hospital room,” Debby said.

Yves glanced at Adele and Charlie, then stepped forward to help Debby out of the room.

The couple, now the target of Debby’s anger, kept quiet. Charlie’s face was clouded with obvious frustration.

“Why would he turn off his phone for no reason?” Charlie muttered.

Adele pressed her lips together and shot him a look. “Let’s just go over there first.”

“Chiara…” Debby sighed softly.

Heather saw Debby come in and hurried over to greet her.

“Grandma, you’re here?” Heather said.

Debby took Heather’s hand and gave it a gentle pat. “Heather, it’s been tough on you. How’s Chiara holding up?”

Heather glanced back at Chiara lying on the bed. “The doctor said she fainted because she took a hit, but she’ll be fine once she wakes up.”

Just then, Charlie and Adele walked in and caught what Heather said. They exchanged a look.

‘She took a hit? What kind of blow was it?’ Charlie wondered.

‘Was it the blow from Marcus being in critical condition? But it’s not the first time he’s been in danger. So what could’ve happened this time that made them call everyone in?’ Charlie thought.

Adele, on the other hand, had a hunch about what was going on. She asked, “Heather, how’s your grandpa doing?”

Heather nodded politely to the couple. “Uncle, Aunt.”

“Grandpa has had three brain surgeries. The doctors say things aren’t looking good. He’s still in the ICU, so we can’t see him for now,” Heather replied.

Adele looked at Chiara, who was white as a sheet on the hospital bed, for a few seconds before turning back to Heather.

“Heather, if there’s anything you want to say, just speak your mind. We’ll support you and Chiara,” Adele said.

Heather glanced at the Goodman family, feeling a pang in her heart.

‘Such a good family, always treating everyone the same regardless of status. What a pity…’ Heather thought.

Heather pulled out Chiara’s phone and handed it straight to them. “My grandpa suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage after seeing this text, and Chiara got so worked up she passed out.”

Debby’s brows furrowed so tightly they almost met as she read the message. She gave Charlie and Adele a piercing stare.

Charlie looked genuinely stunned, totally blindsided, but Adele stayed surprisingly calm.

“What happened? Did you two have any idea he was causing this kind of trouble out there?” Debby snapped.

Charlie shook his head quickly. “Mom, I really didn’t know. If I had, I’d have straightened him out myself. How would I have known? Adele, you just found out too, right?”

Adele stayed silent, pressing her lips together as she looked at Heather. Her voice was steady, but guilt flickered in her eyes.

“Heather, I’m sorry. Titus was wrong this time. I’ll apologize on his behalf,” Adele said.

“Honey?” Charlie called out, uncertainty flickering in his voice as he looked to Adele for confirmation.

Having lived a long life, Debby understood more than most. She closed her eyes briefly, then walked over to the bed and gently stroked Chiara’s hair with affection.

“Don’t worry, sweetheart. Grandma will stand up for you

Just then, the door to the hospital room swung open.

“Ms. Lynch, Mr. Lynch is awake, but he says he wants to see Mr. Goodman…” a nurse announced.

Heather’s face fell, and she couldn’t help but look straight at the Goodman family.

Her tone was icy. “I can’t reach Titus. Mr. Goodman, Mrs. Goodman, can you get through to him? Please, my grandpa really wants to see him.”

Charlie, for once, looked genuinely ashamed and at a loss. Neither he nor Adele had any idea where Titus was.

An awkward tension hung in the air, making everyone uncomfortable for a moment.

Just then, Chiara finally stirred awake.

“Hey, you’re finally awake, kiddo?” Debby said softly.

Chiara turned her head and saw Debby. Her tears spilled out uncontrollably, and she could barely get the words out.

She looked totally lost, like she didn’t know what to do.

“Grandma…” Chiara sobbed.

Debby gently stroked her hair, her voice soft and comforting. “I’m here, kiddo. Don’t be afraid. No matter what happened, Grandma’s got your back.”

“Grandma…” Chiara lay quietly on the hospital bed, and all she could see in her mind was that photo.

It was a picture of Titus and Elaine hugging each other tightly in the hospital room.

Everything, even the time and place, was right there.

“Grandma, he lied to me. He lied to me…” Chiara sobbed, her voice breaking.

Debby kept wiping away Chiara’s tears. “Alright, alright, Grandma knows. Grandma’s got your back, I’ll make things right for you.”

Chiara closed her eyes and shook her head. “He promised me. He swore he wouldn’t see her again, but he still went to see her. He lied to me, he totally lied to me…”

Everyone’s eyes were fixed on Chiara.

Debby’s heart ached for her, her eyes red with tears as she held Chiara’s hand tight.

“Don’t cry, sweetheart. You’re pregnant, remember? Grandma’s got you, okay? Everything’s gonna be alright,” Debby said softly.

Yves, who’d been lurking quietly in the corner, snapped his head up, his gaze landing on Chiara’s stomach.

‘Wait, she’s pregnant?’ Yves thought, totally floored.

Yves scanned the room, then slipped out without a word and tried calling Titus again.

But Titus’s phone was still off.

Yves frowned, then fired off a quick message with the gist of what was happening, hoping Titus would see it the second he powered his phone back up.

Just as he put his phone down, he spotted a familiar face with a grim expression. Yves frowned, a bad feeling creeping over him.

“Professor, what’s wrong?” Yves asked, his voice tight with worry.

The professor shook his head and let out a heavy sigh. “My deepest condolences. Mr. Lynch just passed away.”

Yves froze, his whole body going stiff. “What?”

The professor shook his head again, let out another sigh, and pushed open the door to the hospital room, stepping inside.

Yves wanted to step in, knowing how fragile Chiara was right now, but there was nothing he could do.

Heather recognized the professor, and the moment she saw him, a wave of dread washed over her.

“Ms. Lynch, I’m so sorry. We tried everything, but Mr. Lynch has passed away,” the professor said, his voice heavy with regret.

It was like time stopped.

Everyone was stunned. Heather’s face went ghostly pale; she started to leave, but something made her stop and turn back. Chiara looked completely hollow, moving like she was on autopilot as she sat up, her eyes red and locked onto the doctor. “What did you just say?” Chiara’s voice was hoarse and shaky.
