Chapter 142
Titus had a hunch Debby was hiding Chiara. If that was true, then even if he searched every corner of Halinston, he still wouldn’t be able to find her.
Debby might be old now, but back in the day, she was right there with his grandpa, braving every storm together.
Titus knew he wasn’t even qualified to challenge her. All he could do was stand there and beg.
Charlie was just about to lose his cool when Adele grabbed his arm and said, cool as ever, “You really should be pleading.”
He picked up on Adele’s real meaning and bit back his anger. He switched gears and said, “Suit yourself, just stay there and think about what you’ve done!”
Debby just shot Titus a look before getting up, and Adele went over to support her.
Then, Charlie snorted and turned to head back to his room.
The servants had already cleared out of the huge villa, leaving only Titus on his knees and Paul standing nearby.
With a grimace, Paul dropped to his knees next to him. “Mr. Goodman.”
Titus kept his eyes lowered, his face lost in the shadows, but the oppressive vibe around him was almost tangible.
“Sir, do you want me to secretly send someone to look for Mrs. Goodman?” Paul asked in a low voice.
Titus lifted his eyes slightly, giving a faint, bitter smile. “If Grandma had arranged it, there’s no way you’ll find her.”
Paul was stunned, not knowing what to say or do. “So, you’re really just going to stay here on your knees?”
Marcus’s face flashed through Titus’s mind. His eyes darkened, fists clenched, and he gave a wry, self-deprecating smile. “As I should.”
Paul gritted his teeth. “Then I’ll stay here with you.”
Titus slowly closed his eyes, his voice rough and worn out from the trip, feeling drained and powerless. “No, you’ve got other things to take care of.”
“Whatever you need, Mr. Goodman,” Paul said quietly.
Titus opened his eyes, a sharp, almost menacing look flickering in them. “Get to the bottom of those photos.”
Paul nodded, quickly getting to his feet. “Got it, sir. I’ll get to the bottom of it right away. I’ll head out now.”
Titus didn’t say a word. He stayed upright in the middle of the hall, his eyes downcast, staring at nothing.
His mind was filled with images of Chiara; her smile, her anger, her tears.
Titus pressed his lips together, his jaw clenched tight.
‘Ha, Titus, how did you screw things up this badly?’ he thought bitterly.
**:
“How’s Chiara?” Heather asked on the line.
Eunice glanced at Chiara, still lying unconscious on the bed, then walked over to the window and whispered, “She’s not awake yet.”
Heather was silent for a few seconds before finally saying, “Titus won’t just give up that easily. Just head back once she wakes
“Why? Chiara really needs someone by her side right now,” Eunice said anxiously.
“I get it, but it can’t be either of us,” Heather replied. “If Titus can’t find her, he’ll definitely start coming after us.”
Eunice’s eyes widened as it clicked. “Oh, that makes sense, but I just don’t feel right about leaving Chiara all alone.”
“Don’t worry, Debby’s already got someone to look after her,” Heather said.
Eunice glanced at Chiara, her voice soft and reluctant. “Alright, I understand, Heather. I’ll leave once she wakes up.”
“Okay.” After hanging up, Heather slumped back on the couch, looking both exhausted and a little vulnerable.
Kason raised an eyebrow at her. “Are you really planning to break things off with Titus?”
Heather opened her eyes and looked at him. “It’s not just breaking up. It’s ending things for good.”
Kason let out a snort. “Is there really a difference?”
“Of course there is,” Heather replied, getting up and settling into her desk chair. Her family’s group photo sat right there on the desk.
Now, it was just her and Chiara alive in that picture.
“Titus is the one who messed up. He feels guilty toward us, and with Debby in our corner, even if he wanted to, he wouldn’t go after Lynch Group,” Heather said, shooting a look at Kason on the couch.
“You don’t have to worry about having to face off with Titus,” she added.
Kason lounged on the couch, one leg casually crossed over the other, his arm draped lazily along the back as he shot her a sideways glance. “Makes sense.”
C
Heather really didn’t feel like dealing with anyone right now. “Mr. Harris, if you don’t have anything else, you can leave.”
Kason looked at her for a few seconds, then raised an eyebrow and stood up. “Okay, then.”
After Kason left, Heather picked up the family photo, and her eyes grew red with tears.
She gently traced her parents’ faces with her fingertips, her voice broke as she choked out a sob. “I’m sorry, Mom, Dad. I couldn’t protect Grandpa, and I failed to keep Chiara safe.”
Heather pressed the photo to her chest, then collapsed onto her desk, her tears falling soundlessly.
“I was useless. I couldn’t protect my family. Now, all I have left is Chiara and Lynch Group. From now on, I swear I won’t let anyone hurt her again. I’ll protect Lynch Group, no matter what,” she promised.
Kason paused when he heard her sobbing. His gaze was deep and shadowed, impossible to read. He stole a lingering look at Heather through the crack in the door, then quietly closed the office door behind him.
“Mr. Bradford, is Ms. Lynch in there? I’ve got a document that needs her signature,” a staff member asked.
Kason curved his lips into a faint smirk. “Give it to me. I’ll sign.”
The staff member hesitated for a moment, then handed the document to Kason. “Alright, sir. I’ll head out then.”
Kason toyed with the document in his hands, his face cold and distant, completely different from his usual self. He turned and walked into his own office.
Meanwhile, Chiara felt like she was lost in a long, long dream. She was a kid again, her parents were alive, and Grandpa was still strong and healthy.
They were all out together for a family picnic in the spring. Those were such happy times.
But the happiness didn’t last. Suddenly, in the middle of chaos, her parents were covered in blood.
And then she saw her grandpa’s final expression.
She could hear her parents blaming her, disappointment heavy in their voices. “Why did you marry Titus? Why? Grandpa died because of him! It’s all his fault!”
