Chapter 143
Chiara smiled. “What? Are you dumb or something?”
“I…” Eunice looked at her and suddenly found herself at a loss for words.
For a moment, she didn’t know what to do. What’s going on? Is she in shock?’
“Chiara, you…” Eunice began again, her voice trailing off.
Just as she was about to continue, the door swung open. “Ms. Murphy, is Mrs. Goodman awake yet?”
Chiara blinked in confusion. “Mrs. Goodman? Who are you talking about?”
Eunice’s throat felt parched as she gave Chiara a conflicted look. “Chiara, have you really forgotten everything?”
Chiara just stared at her, her face slowly shifting, eyes growing distant and unfocused. After a moment, she dropped her gaze to her stomach.
Eunice, noticing where Chiara was looking, asked softly, “Do you remember everything? About your grandpa… and the baby?”
Chiara kept her head bowed for a long time, her hand gently pressed against her belly. Finally, she whispered to herself, barely loud enough to hear. “I thought I was just dreaming.”
“Chiara?” Eunice called, worry lacing her voice.
Then, Chiara managed a small smile, noticing how uneasy Eunice looked. “Relax, I was just groggy from sleep. For a moment, I thought we were back in the old days, when Mom and Dad were still around, and Grandpa was still here.”
Eunice broke out in a cold sweat. She’d really thought Chiara had forgotten everything, and it scared her out of her wits.
“You nearly gave me a heart attack. I thought you…” Eunice stammered, her voice shaky.
Chiara looked at the familiar face at the door. “Mrs. Walker, what are you doing here?”
The woman looked at her with a mix of emotions, mostly concern. “Debby called me and asked me to come back and take care of you. She just can’t rest easy unless I’m here.
“Please, let me stay with ou, so Debby can finally stop worrying. From now on, I’m on your
side. You can
count on me.”
Chiara couldn’t bring herself to turn down Debby’s kindness, but she just couldn’t manage a smile. “Alright, Mrs. Walker, I understand. I’ll be counting on you from now on.”
Ana Walker let out a sigh of relief when Chiara agreed, then came in carrying a bowl of herbal tonic for pregnancy. “Here, drink this pregnancy tonic while it’s still hot.”
Eunice was about to step aside, but suddenly froze, whipping her head around to stare at Chiara.
“Pregnancy tonic?” she blurted out, her eyes snapping down to Chiara’s belly in shock. “I thought you already lost the baby?”
Chiara shook her head. “I didn’t miscarry. I begged Debby to help me keep it a secret. I want to have this baby in secret, I don’t want this child to have anything to do with him.”
Eunice’s mouth fell open in shock, and she was so stunned she couldn’t speak for a while.
“Here you go, Mrs. Goodman. Drink it while it’s still warm,” Ana said softly.
Chiara took the bowl. Even though she didn’t feel like eating anything, she forced herself to drink it. She had a baby to protect now.
The doctor had warned her that her grief had made the pregnancy unstable, and there were signs she might lose the baby. She had to keep her emotions in check, no matter what.
“Mrs. Walker, you can just call me Chiara from now on,” Chiara said.
Ana studied her for a moment, then nodded. “Alright, Chiara.”
Eunice watched Chiara take small sips of the soup, finally snapping back to reality. She couldn’t help but sigh, “Debby really does treat her so well.”
Debby actually agreed to this, even though Chiara was carrying the Goodman family’s first great-grandchild ever.
‘So what does this mean for everyone?’ Eunice wondered.
Chiara’s eyes flickered, she knew Debby was really giving up a lot for her sake.
“Debby is so good to me,” she murmured.
Ana just smiled. “Debby just wants you and your little one to be safe and happy, that’s all.”
Chiara’s eyes welled up with tears. The more Debby showered her with kindness, the harder it was for her to accept that her grandpa was gone, all because of that damn photo.
It was all on her; she’d put her trust in the wrong person, and that opened the door for everything to fall apart.
If only she’d had the guts to push for that divorce, no matter what it cost, she believed her grandpa would still be here with them.
Eunice’s heart twisted seeing Chiara cry in silence. She knelt down and put a comforting on Chiara’s belly. “At least the baby’s safe, and that’s what matters. Don’t let yourself fall apart, right now, you have to focus on your child.
“People can’t come back once they’re gone, so you have to stay strong. Grandpa loved you so much, he’d want you to take care of his great-grandchild, not let grief hurt the baby, right?”
Chiara nodded. “I know. You’re right. I’ll put the baby first from now on.”
Eunice let out a sigh of relief. “That’s good to hear. I have to head back soon, but with Mrs. Walker here, I can finally relax.”
voice hoarse. “Where are you going?”
Chiara turned to he
“Heather just called me. She’s worried Titus might send someone to tail us and find you, so we’re not coming over for now. If you need anything, just call me,” Eunice explained.
Chiara’s eyes flickered at the mention of his name, but she simply nodded, keeping her feelings to herself. “Alright, you should go. Don’t worry about me.”
Eunice squeezed her hand. “If you ever feel bored, just video chat me. It’ll be like I’m right there with you.”
“Okay. Head back, be careful on your way,” Chiara replied.
“Alright, I’m heading out,” Eunice said, giving her a reassuring smile before leaving.
Once Chiara finished the soup, Ana took the spoon and bowl away. “Chiara, I’ll be right outside. Just call me if you need anything.”
“Okay, thank you, Mrs. Walker.” Chiara nodded.
Chapter 143
After the two of them left, Chiara finally turned to her phone on the nightstand. When she picked it up, she saw all the missed calls were from one person.
She deleted and blocked Titus everywhere, no way for him to reach her now.
But when her eyes landed on that photo, her grip tightened around the phone, completely out of her control.
The moment she first saw that photo, she’d felt nothing but shock, pain, and even hatred.
‘Grandpa… How would he have felt, finding out I was pregnant and then seeing that photo?’ she wondered, her chest tightening. ‘Would it have broken his heart?
‘Would he have been furious, seeing his granddaughter treated like this, played for a fool?’
Tears slipped down Chiara’s cheeks as she cried in silence. She couldn’t bring herself to delete the photo. Instead, she encrypted it, locking it away.
She wanted to remember forever that it was her own foolishness that made her grandpa leave them too soon.
“I’m so sorry, little one. I wish I could give you a real family. Forgive me, will you?” Chiara murmured, her voice thick with guilt and heartbreak.
