Chapter 148

Kason’s eyes were dark as he watched her slender figure in silence.

“Even if it means risking the entire Lynch Group?” he asked.

Heather turned to face him. “Yeah, even if it comes to that. But relax, even if Titus really comes after the Lynch Group, I’ll keep my word to you.”

Kason gave her a half-smile. “Ms. Lynch, you really do stick to your word.”

Chiara watched him in silence as well.

Her phone rang, and she glanced at the screen. “I need to take this.”

Kason gestured for her to answer, then walked over to the couch and sat down, clearly not planning to leave or avoid the call.

Heather shot him a look. Since he wasn’t leaving, she couldn’t exactly kick him out, so she turned back and answered the phone. “Hello?”

“Heather,” Chiara said.

“Hey, how are you feeling? Are you doing okay?” Heather asked.

Chiara hesitated. “Actually… there’s something I need to tell you.”

Heather’s expression tightened: “Okay, tell me?”

“I didn’t miscarry,” Chiara said.

Heather couldn’t help blurting out, “You didn’t miscarry?”

“Yeah, I asked Grandma to say that. I just wanted to cut all ties with him. If he found out the baby was still here, he’d never leave me alone. I really didn’t have a choice,” Chiara explained.

Heather’s eyes welled up as she listened. She touched the glass and let out a quiet laugh. “Well done, Chiara. You did the right thing.”

“Sorry for making you worry, Heather,” Chiara said softly.

Heather took a deep breath, relief flooding her. The baby was safe; that was the best news she could’ve hoped for.

“I really thought you were all I had left,” she said.

Chiara caught the meaning behind her words and lowered her voice. “It’s my fault, Heather. I can’t help but feel responsible for Grandpa’s death. If it hadn’t been for me.”

“Come on, don’t talk like that. Nobody could’ve predicted this. If anyone’s to blame, it’s the one who caused all this. You’re a victim too, so don’t go blaming yourself.

“Grandpa loved you so much, he’d be devastated to hear you say that. He’d never want you to keep beating yourself up,” Heather said gently.

“Heather, I’m planning to leave Halinston for now,” Chiara said.

Heather’s eyes flickered as she looked out the window. “Have you decided where you’re going?”

“Yeah, I have. I probably won’t be in touch for a while, but I’ll email you. Grandma asked Mrs. Walker to come take care of

me, so you don’t need to worry. She’ll handle everything.” Chiara said.

Heather closed her eyes, lowered her hand, and said softly, “Alright, I trust she will take good care of you.”

After they hung up, Heather turned to look at Kason, who was lounging on the couch.

Kason’s eyes were shadowed and intense as he stared at her tear-stained eyes for a few seconds before he finally spoke. “Your sister didn’t miscarry?”

Heather frowned at him. “I’m asking you to keep this to yourself.”

Kason’s gaze darkened for a split second, but he just smirked and shrugged, as if it didn’t matter to him at all.

“Relax, your business isn’t my concern. I’m not that free to get involved,” he said.

Then, propping his chin up with his hand, he looked at her and said, “Still, congrats. You just said your sister was all you had left, but pretty soon, you’ll have another family member.”

Just the thought of Chiara’s baby made Heather’s expression soften. “Yeah, that’s right.”

Kason stared at her for a few seconds before slowly getting to his feet. “Alright, I’m heading out. Think about that project I mentioned and let me know your decision soon.”

Heather hesitated for a moment. “But you said it was only a fifty-fifty chance.”

Kason shoved his hands in his pockets, looking totally unfazed. “It’s always a fifty-fifty shot with me. Wasn’t it a gamble when you came to me, Ms. Lynch? What a gambler needs most is guts.”.

Heather’s brows furrowed, hesitation written all over her face.

Noticing her struggle, Kason stepped closer, lifted her chin with a finger, tracing her soft jawline. He leaned in, his voice low and teasing by her ear.

“Ever heard the saying? Fortune favors the bold, the timid go hungry. Heather, do you dare to bet with me?” He smirked.

Heather turned her head away, dodging his playful touch. “But if this goes south, the Lynch Group could risk going under again. Meanwhile, you walk away unscathed.”

Kason arched a brow, lightly pinching her earlobe. “You’re not wrong, but can’t you be a little more optimistic? I’m not wrecking my brand over the Lynch Group. If my reputation tanks, how do I stay in business?”

Heather turned to face him, and they locked eyes. Kason leaned in, lips just inches from hers, clearly about to kiss her.

Heather frowned and pulled away. “My grandpa just died.”

Kason froze, gave her a long look, then let go and stepped back. “Ah, sorry.”

Heather shot him a frosty look, but there wasn’t a trace of apology on his face.

He even had the nerve to just ask her, bold as brass. “So, you’re in/mourning, huh? How long does that last?”

Heather didn’t even hesitate. “A hundred days.”

Kason’s face darkened, a cold glint flashing in his eyes. He let out a soft scoff. “So, Ms. Lynch, you want me to join you for the whole mourning period?”

Heather kept her expression cool. “I never said that. If you can’t hold back, go find someone else.”

Kason ran his tongue along his teeth, eyes half-lidded as he stared her down. “You told me to go find someone else, so don’t

Heather pressed her lips together, her expression stiff. “I already told you, if you go with someone else, you’re not allowed to touch me again.”

Kason just let out a mocking laugh, grabbing her chin and forcing her to look at him.

“Didn’t you already know what kind of man I am the first time we met? Yet you still came to me, throwing yourself at me. Ms. Lynch, since you made your choice, don’t go playing the saint now,” he said.
