It had been a whole year since she last had a dream like this. Yet he dream returned, and every moment of it felt vivid and real. It was like reliving it all. Not a single detail was missing.

Chiara woke up with a start in the middle of the night.

“Grandpa!” Chiara cried out, her voice trembling as she jolted awake.

She sat up abruptly in bed, a dim light left on in the room. She turned her head to check on Ryan.

The little guy had already rolled over and was sleeping peacefully on his stomach.

Chiara let out a sigh of relief and touched her forehead, feeling a trace of sweat. She threw off the covers, grabbed her phone, got out of bed, and left the room, heading downstairs.

She pushed open the door to Marcus’s room. Nothing had changed. It was exactly the same as before.

She switched on the light and sat down by the bed, softly touching the spotless bedding.

Even after all these years with no one living here, the room was kept spotless, just like someone was still around.

She looked up at the family photo sitting on the nightstand.

She picked it up. In the picture, everyone was gathered together, and her grandmother was still there with them. Chiara was nestled in her mother’s arms, her eyes curved in a bright smile. She must’ve been about five or six.

Heather was a little older, maybe six or seven, cradled by their father. The sisters held hands, beaming at the camera.

Every face in the photo was glowing with happiness.

That once bustling home was now filled with nothing but silence and loneliness.

Staring at her family in the photo, Chiara’s eyes grew misty with tears.

Just then, Heather came home, smelling faintly of alcohol. She noticed the light was on and figured Chiara was inside, so she walked over and knocked softly on the door.

“Why are you still up so late?” Heather asked softly.

Chiara turned to look at her, blinking. “You’re home late.”

Heather nodded. “This is early for me. What about you? Can’t sleep?”

Chiara set the photo frame down, glanced at it, and shook her head. “Not really, I just woke up from a dream and came down to look around. Do you want some warm water?”

Heather smiled and nodded. “Sure.”

Chiara made Heather a cup of warm water. As she brought it over, she caught sight of a hickey on the back of Heather’s neck, which instantly reminded her of how the Lynch Group had been thriving these past couple of days.

“Thanks, Chiara,” Heather said.

After drinking most of the cup, Heather let out a sigh of relief as she smiled.

Heather smiled and shook her head. “You have nothing to apoloze for. It’s my fault I couldn’t protect you, and you had to leave because of that. But things are different now. From now we’ll always be together”

As she spoke, Heather glanced around the big house. The living om had fresh carpets laid out, and there were toys lying, all over the place.

Her gaze grew gentle. “Honestly, it just feels good knowing you ys are here when I come home.”

Chiara felt a pang of guilt and pulled her sister into a gentle hug

Yeah, we’re staying put from now on. Once Ryan’s old enough for preschool, I’ll join you at work,” Chiara said softly.

Heather didn’t refuse. She didn’t want her little sister stuck at home all day with the kid, anyway.

“Perfect timing. We’ll definitely need more hands at the company” Heather replied.

Suddenly, Chiara found herself thinking about Kason.

“Heather, Kason’s leaving tomorrow, isn’t he?” Chiara asked.

At the mention of his name, Heather’s eyes grew a little distant. Yeah, it’ll be tough on you. We’ll get through it together, just the two of us.”

Chiara hesitated for a moment before asking tentatively, “Are you two still together?”

“We merely used each other, that’s all. We were never actually together,” Heather replied.

Kason never lacked female attention. Even with Heather around plenty of women at work were flirting with him, and some didn’t even bother to hide it.

Kason never refused anyone, but he seemed to rein in his usual layboy ways because of the promise he’d made to Heather.

“He probably can’t wait to get out of here,” Heather said.

Heather guessed that was why Kason made everything run so smoothly for her and the Lynch Group in the last six months. It was likely that Kason had grown tired of it all and just wanted leave.

Kason was never one to settle down and was always chasing bigger horizons.

“You never felt anything for him?” Chiara asked softly.

Heather shook her head. “No. I knew what kind of man he was from the very beginning. I was never going to get myself into trouble over him. I’ve always known exactly what I was doing.”

Chiara gazed at her softly. “Heather, you’ve got me, and Ryan too

Heather smiled and gave her arm a gentle pat. “Yeah, I have you both.”

“Alright, it’s getting late. You should get some rest,” Heather said.

Chiara nodded. “I want to visit Mom, Dad, and Grandpa tomorrow. Will you be free?”

“Yeah, let’s head out early then,” Heather replied.

“Alright, night, Heather,” Chiara said.

Titus stepped out of his study. It was already way past midnight le’d spent the whole afternoon in his office, just zoning out and getting absolutely nothing done.

Back in his room, he picked up his phone and saw that every single missed call was from Yvonne. He frowned, tossed the phone aside, and didn’t bother to answer.

He grabbed his cigarettes, lit one up, and wandered out onto the balcony for a smoke.

Tilting his head back, he stared at the night sky. It was weird, the stars tonight looked brighter than on any other night.

After finishing his cigarette, Titus glanced at their wedding photo, his eyes dark and unreadable.
