Chapter 182 What Are You Doing?

Chapter 182 What Are You Doing?

Chiara instinctively turned her head. When she saw Wilbert and Jeffrey, she was stunned for a moment.

Wilbert greeted her politely, “Mrs. Goodman, long time no see.”

Chiara nodded slightly at both of them. “Long time no see. But Wilbert, you can call me by my name from now on.”

Wilbert scratched his head. “Sorry, I’m just used to it.”

Chiara gave a small smile, her eyes meeting Jeffrey’s. He was watching her, too.

“Long time no see,” Jeffrey said.

She smiled back. “It hasn’t really been that long.”

Truth is, they hadn’t really hung out much before anyway.

Titus never asked her to join his get-togethers with them.

There was only one time. It was the night before they got their marriage license. Someone called her, saying Titus had drunk too much, so she hurried over, worried about him.

But when she arrived, she found out he wasn’t drunk at all. He’d just been playing a prank on her. That was actually the first time she’d met the group for real.

Wilbert couldn’t help but ask, “Mrs. Goodman, no, Chiara, where’s your son? Can I see him?”

Chiara nodded. “Sure, I’ll bring him to Goodman Manor in a couple of days. You guys can visit him at his grandma’s.”

“Sounds good,” Wilbert said.

Jeffrey shot Wayne a look. “Mr. Pierce, are you trying to be her bodyguard now?”

Chiara glanced at Jeffrey, then at Wayne. She was about to speak, but Wayne nodded.

“It’s my pleasure,” Wayne replied.

Jeffrey raised an eyebrow, a half-smile on his face. “Mr. Pierce, you’ve got guts. Here, let me toast you.”

There was a teasing edge to his voice, like he was enjoying Wayne’s predicament.

Chiara couldn’t help but take another look at him. After more than two years apart, everyone seemed pretty much the same.

She’d still catch rumors about Jeffrey from time to time. He was still the same old ladies’ man, always surrounded by

women.

But Wilbert was a different story. She’d seen in the news that he was engaged.

Who he was engaged to really surprised her.

It was Vera Combs.

Speaking of the devil, Vera showed up right then.

“What are you guys doing here?” Vera asked curiously, looping her arm through Wilbert’s.

It wasn’t until she turned her head and spotted Chiara that she stopped short for a second.

“Chiara?” Vera said, surprised.

Chiara nodded at her. “Hey, Vera.”

Wilbert glanced at Vera, his fiancée, and said, “She’s President now.”

Chiara caught on. Julius Combs must’ve stepped down.

“Ms. Combs, Chiara said.

“Oh, come on, don’t be so formal. Call me Vera,” Vera replied with a grin. Then she shot Wayne a curious look. Even after two years in Halinston and all those trips abroad, she hadn’t changed a bit.

“Chiara, is this handsome guy your boyfriend?” Vera blurted out, not bothering to hide her curiosity.

Chiara froze for a second. She really hadn’t expected Vera to be so blunt, and it left her momentarily stunned.

But her pause just made her seem silent.

Wayne glanced down at her, his gaze gentle and want

“Hello, Ms. Combs. I’m Wayne Pierce,” he said.

“From the Pierce Group?” Vera asked.

“Yes,” Wayne replied.

“Hey, nice to meet you. Honestly, you two actually look pretty good together…” Vera said with a grin.

Wilbert’s lips twitched. He was about to tell her to watch what she said, but before he could, Vera turned to Jeffrey.

“Hey, Jeffrey, I remember you were interested in Li Qian before, weren’t you?” Vera blurted out.

The moment she said that, the whole vibe in the room went ice-cold.

Wayne looked straight at Jeffrey.

Wilbert suddenly remembered something, too. He gave Jeffrey a look, moved Vera behind him, and whispered to her in warning.

“What are you even saying?” Wilbert muttered.

Vera glanced around at the awkward silence, then gave a mischievous wink.

“Who, me? What did I say?” Vera replied, all innocent and playful.

“You…” Wilbert started, but the words just hung in the air.

Chiara felt the awkwardness in the air. No one said a word until Wilbert finally jumped in to cover for Vera.

“Just ignore her. She’s always spouting nonsense,” Wilbert said, forcing a laugh.

“What nonsense?”

From behind, Titus’s rich, magnetic voice broke the awkward silence. He’d obviously caught every word Vera just said. Wilbert stiffened and turned to Titus, his expression shifting.

“Titus…” Wilbert muttered, his voice trailing off.

Vera noticed Titus and gave him a wave.

Titus gave Jeffrey a look, then sized up Wayne standing next to Chiara.

Those two were really eyesores.

He fixed Chiara with a dark, intense stare.

Chiara sensed his gaze but only met his eyes for a brief moment.

“Wayne, let’s

go look for Heather. Haven’t seen her in a bit,” Chiara said.

Wayne nodded at her. “Sure.”

Chiara gave them a nod, then turned and headed off.

Wayne stayed close behind her.

Titus didn’t try to stop them. He just watched as the two of them left one after the other, then finally turned back to the

group.

“Don’t you guys have anything better to do?” Titus said, his voice low and cold.

Vera ducked behind Wilbert, trying to hide.

Wilbert cleared his throat. “She is tactless with her words. Don’t get mad.”

Titus glanced at Vera, his voice cool. “You really think she didn’t do that on purpose?”

Vera smiled. Of course, she did it on purpose. She’s way too slick to make a mistake like that.

Yeah, she did it on purpose.

Vera shrugged. “Just being honest.”

Wilbert shot her a look. “Seriously, you’re still talking?”

Vera glanced at Jeffrey and said, “See? He didn’t even deny it.”

Wilbert just stared, speechless.

He was completely defeated by this little devil.

If it hadn’t been for the booze messing things up that night, there was no way he could’ve survived Vera’s antics.
