Chapter 189 Just Have Another Kid
Cory said, “Dr. Shaw should have explained your child’s condition to both of you. The Illness itself isn’t fatal, but there is a risk of life-threatening situations. From now on, you’ll need to be especially careful when caring for your child. Do your best to prevent any injuries that could cause bleeding.”
Chiara quickly asked, “Is there any way to cure it?”
Cory explained, “Cases like this aren’t common, but they’re not unheard of. Most of the time, as long as you’re careful, things are fine. But accidents can happen. Last year, a teenage boy was hit while riding his motorcycle. He didn’t have any internal injuries or broken bones, but a piece of metal sliced open his thigh. He lost so much blood that, on the way to the hospital, he couldn’t be saved.”
Chiara’s face turned pale instantly, and she swayed on her feet. The nurse quickly reached out to steady her.
“Is everything okay?” the nurse asked, worried.
Yves glanced at Titus and asked, “Professor Duffy, is there any solution?”
Cory looked at him and adjusted his glasses. “There wasn’t a solution before, but in recent years, we’ve found a way.”
Chiara’s heart, which had been in her throat, finally settled. “What is it?” she asked.
“We can transplant stem cells from a close relative to restore the child’s ability to clot blood,” Cory replied.
Chiara didn’t quite get it, so she looked at Yves.
Yves caught her gaze and explained, “Basically, you and Titus would need to have another baby. Then, we’d use stem cells from the new baby’s umbilical cord blood to restore Ryan’s ability to clot blood.”
Cory nodded. “Exactly. Statistics show that using umbilical cord stem cells from a sibling has a success rate of up to ninety-nine percent.”
Chiara was in total shock. Her mind shut down, and she couldn’t process anything.
She looked utterly helpless. Her expression was so lost that it was almost painful to watch.
Yves, especially, stole a glance at her before dropping his gaze, unable to face her. Inside, he was torn up, even regretting he’d brought it up at all.
Yves was about to say something, but Titus shot him a warning look that made him swallow his words.
Titus handed Ryan to Yves. “Take him outside to play for a bit.”
Yves forced a smile and took Ryan. “Come on, let’s go check out the big trees, okay?”
Titus looked at Ryan and said softly, “Be good, Yves will take you to see the big trees. You’ll be back soon.”
Ryan nodded, not understanding but going along with it.
Chiara stood there in a daze, watching Yves carry Ryan out. Only after they’d left did she finally manage to speak, her voice barely above a whisper. “Is there no other way?”
Cory shook his head. “If you want to make sure nothing ever goes wrong, this is the only solution that the World Health Organization recognizes. Of course, you could be extra careful and keep a close eye on your child. Most of the time, that’s enough.”
Chiara felt her throat tighten. But no one was perfect, and accidents could happen no matter how careful one was. Sure, Chiara could stick to Ryan like glue now, but what about when Ryan was older?
Could she really promise Ryan’d always be safe?
Just then, Cory’s phone rang. He glanced at the screen before turning to them.
“Mr. Goodman, I’ve got surgery to get to, so I’ll head out now. For this kind of thing, your kid doesn’t need any meds. You just keep him from getting hurt or bleeding, and he’ll be just fine,” Cory said.
Titus gave a slight nod, then looked at Chiara’s pale face. His gaze was deep and shadowed, impossible to read.
He walked over and gently drew her into his embrace. “Don’t worry. Didn’t the doctor say we just need to be careful?”
Chiara didn’t push him away. Her mind was flooded with thoughts of all the things that could go wrong.
Her parents had died in an accident. They bled terribly, and even the doctors couldn’t save them.
What if something like that happened to Ryan one day?
Of course, Chiara didn’t want any accidents to happen, but life was unpredictable like that.

She closed her eyes for a moment, then looked up at him. “What are you thinking?”
Titus met her gaze, his eyes dark and unreadable. “Thinking about what?”
Chiara held his gaze, her voice steady. “You heard what the doctor said. If we want to completely cure Ryan’s clotting disorder, we need a stem cell transplant. And the best match will be if you and I have another child.”
Titus frowned, letting his hand drop from her shoulder as he fell quiet for a long moment.
Chiara’s brow furrowed as his silence dragged on. “Why aren’t you saying anything?”
Titus pressed his lips into a thin line, his voice quiet as he looked at her. “The doctor said as long as we’re careful, he’ll be
fine.”
Chiara felt a wave of frustration rise at his response.
She retorted, “Can you honestly promise Ryan will be safe for his entire life? Nobody goes through life without getting sick or needing surgery. Even something as routine as a day can be risky. Can you really guarantee nothing bad will ever happen to him?”
Titus fell silent again, his eyes downcast, lost in thought.
Chiara grew anxious, stepped up, and grabbed his collar. “What, you don’t want to?” she demanded.
Titus finally looked up, seeing how flustered she was. He gently took her wrist, his voice low and soothing. “Chiara, calm down. Ryan’s fine right now. You don’t have to get so worked up.”
Chiara’s face was cold. Her eyes started to fill with tears. “He’s your son. Aren’t you scared?”
“I am, but I have to keep my head,” Titus said quietly.
Chiara didn’t say another word, just stared at Titus, her gaze intense as she repeated her question. “Is it that you don’t want
to?”
Titus met her eyes, his expression shadowed and impossible to read. Then he threw one question back at her.
“And what about you? Would you do it?”
Chiara froze for a split second, then answered without hesitation, “Of course, I would. I’d do anything for Ryan!”
Nothing in the world mattered more to her than Ryan.
Titus’s gaze was shadowed and hard to read. “I understand how you feel, but there’s more on my mind than just that.”
“What exactly is bothering you?” Chiara pressed.
“I get that Ryan means everything to you, but if we have another baby together, what about that child? Would you want the child to be born just to be a donor?” Titus asked, his voice low.
That question left Chiara completely stunned. Her hands, which had been clenched tight, suddenly went limp, and her gaze wavered.
“I…” she stammered, at a loss for words.
Titus squeezed her hand gently, his voice low and steady. “Let’s calm down,’ This is a big deal. We need to think it through, okay?
“I’m not against having another baby with you. I just think that even if we’re doing this for Ryan, we have to be responsible for that new life. We have to treat them the same, right?”
Chiara was left speechless. She hadn’t thought that far ahead. Her mind was consumed with saving Ryan.
She’d seen the aftermath of her parents’ accident with her eyes, and that image was seared into her mind for the rest of her life.
That was why she lived in constant fear that something terrible might happen to Ryan, just like it did to her parents.
If something did happen, Ryan’d have way less time to get help than other kids, and his odds of surviving would drop a lot,
too.
She couldn’t bring herself to gamble on the chance that nothing bad would ever happen to Ryan in the future.
Even if the odds were just one in ten thousand, she still couldn’t take that risk.
“And what happens after that baby’s born? Ryan was already brought into a family that’s got its own problems. Do you want our next kid to be born into the same mess?” Titus said.
Chiara slowly bowed her head, and Titus gently wrapped her in his arms.
“It’s not as urgent or terrible as it seems. A minor scratch won’t cause any serious bleeding. You don’t have to be so anxious. Take it easy, alright?” Titus murmured.
