After they got home, Chiara bathed Ryan and got him into his pajamas, but her thoughts were all over the place. Everything had been going just as she’d planned, but she never imagined Ryan would have a clotting disorder.

At least it wasn’t acute leukemia. She had no idea what she’d do if it were.

As soon as Ryan got into bed, he started yawning, clearly exhausted from all the fun. Surprisingly, without Chiara needing to pat or soothe him to sleep, he just hugged his stuffed animal, rolled over, and was out like a light.

After tucking him in, Chiara switched off the main lights, leaving just the nightlight glowing softly.

She lay back down, picked up her phone, and sent Eunice a quick text asking about the situation.

Eunice didn’t reply right away. About half an hour later, she sent over an insanely long voice message.

Chiara pulled out her headphones, put them on, and hit play.

Eunice said, “I seriously can’t believe this. That girl is just a college freshman, barely twenty! My brother says he doesn’t even remember what she looked like that night. His friends got him drunk on spiked drinks, and the girl was working part- time at the hotel.

“My brother basically forced her. But for some reason, she ran off afterward and never called the cops. It wasn’t until her belly got so big she couldn’t hide it anymore, and the school found out, that her parents got involved.

“Her parents were so furious that they wanted to drag her to the hospital for an abortion. That’s when she finally freaked out and spilled everything. Now her parents are coming straight for my brother. They’re not after money. They want him locked up!

“Right now it’s still under wraps, but if those parents keep pushing, this could turn into a huge scandal. My brother might really end up in jail…”

Once Chiara finished listening, she shot back a reply.

Chiara said, “Don’t freak out yet. This has been brewing for a few days, but the parents didn’t rush to the police. There’s gotta be a reason.

“Their daughter’s pregnant, and you know how parents are, always looking out for their kids. So, what does your brother have to say about all this?”

Eunice said, “He says he’s willing to step up.”

Chiara said, “Step up how?”

Eunice said, “He’ll take care of the kid when it’s born, and he’ll make sure the girl and her family are looked after too.”

Eunice asked, “What’s wrong?”

Chiara said, “So, your brother hasn’t even considered marrying her, has he?”

Eunice said, “He hasn’t mentioned it.”

Chiara said, “Maybe you guys should actually ask the girl and her family what they want before making any decisions, instead of just assuming what’s best for them.”

Eunice didn’t reply after that. Chiara slowly put her phone down, but she just couldn’t fall asleep with all that on her mind. She turned her head to glance at Ryan, who was sleeping soundly, then slipped out from under the covers and got up. She made her way back to Marcus’s room, sat down on the edge of the bed, and picked up the photo frame, studying it intently.

She gently traced her fingers over Marcus’s kind, loving smile.

Chiara whispered, “Grandpa, Ryan’s sick. He’s such a good kid, so sensible and well-behaved. If you were still around, I know you’d absolutely adore him.

“I know I shouldn’t let myself get caught up with Titus again…

“But Ryan is my whole world. I can’t let anything happen to him, not even the slightest risk.”

Chiara’s eyes grew misty. For the past two years, she’d tried her hardest to face the memories of what happened before.

But honestly, she was just too scared to confront it.

“Grandpa, I’m so sorry…” Chiara whispered.

Chiara came back and saw the light still on in Marcus’s room. She walked over and stood quietly in the doorway, watching Heather inside.

She pushed the door open, walked in, and sat down beside Heather.

Heather said softly, “Grandpa loved us so much. He’d never blame you, Chiara. He’d only be worried about you getting hurt, and that’s why he got upset.

“Seeing you like this would just break his heart even more. He’d feel like he let us down, like he didn’t do enough to keep us

safe,”

Chiara gently rested her head on Heather’s shoulder. “Heather, I know you’ve been through so much all these years. I really feel sorry. I wish I could’ve done more to help you…”

Heather squeezed her hand and spoke softly, “You’ve already given so much for this family. If you hadn’t stepped up and faced Titus back then, I couldn’t have managed Lynch Group at all. Honestly, I might have lost our family altogether.

“So don’t ever say you haven’t done enough or haven’t helped me. You’ve sacrificed so much. With Mom, Dad, and Grandpa gone, I’m the older sister, so I’m the one who has to take responsibility for the Lynch family.

“You don’t need to worry about me. Lynch Group is thriving. We haven’t let our parents down, and we’ve kept the Lynch family’s legacy alive. We really have done great.”

Chiara’s heart felt heavy, so heavy she could barely stand it.

“If your next child is a boy, the Goodman family won’t try to take Ryan from us, and I’ll feel at ease handing Lynch Group over

Chiara knew Heather was only saying those things to ease her mind, to take some of the weight off her shoulders.

“Heather, don’t you ever want to fall in love and get married?” Chiara asked softly.

Heather shook her head. “I never will.”
