Chapter 2171 Already Gave You A Chance

Chapter 217 | Already Gave You A Chance

“Mr. Yates, you can go in, but you’ll need to put on a protective suit first. It’s for your own safety,” the nurse said.

Jeffrey glanced at the woman in the hospital room, then finally nodded.

“Hurry up,” he said.

“Yes, right away!”

The nurse brought over two protective suits.

Once they were both suited up, the nurse finally opened the door to the hospital room.

Elaine’s room was almost always kept locked.

Even when they brought her food or medicine, it was all passed through the slot under the door.

But when Elaine was first transferred here, it was a real struggle.

She was infected, totally uncooperative, and could start screaming like a maniac at any second.

Dealing with her was a nightmare for the staff.

So this was a high-security ward.

There were several vents in the ceiling that could pump in sedatives whenever Elaine lost control.

Otherwise, the staff would never risk going in.

One time, a nurse got scratched by her and had to rush for a post-exposure shot. She was living in constant anxiety every day, but luckily, the tests showed she was fine.

But after three months of treatment and training, Elaine wasn’t nearly as defiant or crazy as she was at the beginning.

When the door opened, Jeffrey stepped inside, but Elaine acted like she couldn’t hear or see him at all.

She was totally caught up in her frantic scribbling, the things she drew looked twisted and downright creepy.

“Elaine,” Jeffrey called out her name.

But the woman on the bed didn’t even acknowledge him, lost in her own world.

Seeing this, the nurse reminded him, “Mr. Yates, names don’t work here. You have to call her by her number.”

She showed him how it’s done, calling out, “Number 32!”

Like clockwork, Elaine, who’d been totally out of it, suddenly looked up.

Her face was empty, her eyes glassy, like she wasn’t really seeing anything.

She didn’t seem to see Jeffrey at all, just locked her gaze on the nurse.

“Ah, take medicine, it’s time to take medicine.”

The nurse glanced at Jeffrey and explained, “We only call them when it’s time for their meds, so that’s what they respond to.”

With that, she pulled a piece of candy out of her pocket and tossed it onto Elaine’s bed.

Elaine picked it up, put it in her mouth, and chewed without any emotion. Whether it was sweet or bitter didn’t matter. All she knew was that she had to obey and take her meds.

Jeffrey’s eyes grew cold as he stared at Elaine for a long time, before finally speaking to the nurse.

“Leave us. I need to speak with her alone,” he said.

The nurse glanced at Elaine, then double-checked the iron chain locked around her ankle to make sure it was secure.

“Mr. Yates, the chain only lets her move about a meter. just enough to get to the bathroom. Please keep a safe distance from her, the nurse cautioned.

Jeffrey nodded, and only then did the nurse feel reassured enough to leave.

Jeffrey stopped at a safe distance, just watching her in silence.

But Elaine didn’t even seem human anymore.

She was so thin, emaciated to the point of being a shadow of her former self. There was nothing left of the woman she used to be.

Successfully unlocked!

When they found her three months ago, she looked line sety Coug Detween life and death, more ghost than person. For a moment, no one could even recognize her.

He brought her back, and in the end, the doctors said she was suffering from a mental illness, no doubt brought on by everything she’d been through.

As for what she’d gone through, he could pretty much imagine.

Those test results already told the whole story.

Jeffrey seriously doubted Elaine had anything to do with Ryan’s kidnapping.

After all, she was locked up in a place like this, with zero freedom. There’s no way she could’ve done anything, even if she wanted to.

He was only here because of Paul’s call.

Elaine kept her head down, lost in her own chaotic drawings, as if Jeffrey was completely invisible to her.

In the end, Jeffrey turned on his heel and left the room, not saying a single word.

As the door shut, Elaine’s movements faltered for just a heartbeat. then she went right back to it.

She cocked her head and kept drawing, the corners of her lips curling up in a faint smile.

Her hand flew across the paper, faster and faster, the lines growing more frantic with every stroke…

Suddenly, cop cars started popping up all over the city.

People thought something serious was going down, but the official explanation was that it was just a drill. Chiara sat in her chair, looking completely out of it, while Titus held her hand tight and never let go. Paul came running over, drenched in sweat. He glanced at Chiara, then gave Titus a shake of his head.

Still nothing.

Still searching…

Lena had clearly come prepared. She took the child and managed to avoid every single security camera in the area.

That could only mean one thing. She’d scoped out the place ahead of time, memorized every camera angle, and slipped past them with almost boring precision.

Now, the only footage left was from inside the hospital.

Tracking her down just got a whole lot harder.

Suddenly, Chiara buried her face in her hands, her voice trembling with tears. “I never should’ve come back… I never should’ ve come back…”

Titus’s eyes turned icy. He didn’t believe Lena’s goal was merely the child.

Even if the police couldn’t find her for the time being, he was certain she would take the initiative to contact them.

If her target was him, then Ryan would be safe for now.

Of course, Titus kept all this to himself. There was no way Chiara would listen, not in the state she was in.

Just then, a cop came running over.

“We found a lead,” he said.

Chiara jerked her head up at the sound. She tried to get to her feet, but her legs were like jelly and she nearly stumbled, her head spinning.

Titus caught her before she could fall, then turned to the cop.

“We found this uniform in a trash can two kilometers away,” the cop reported.

Paul grabbed the clothes and knew right away. They were Lena’s work uniform from Apex International Kindergarten.

“Mr. Goodman, Ms. Lynch, we’ll be stepping up the search in this area,” the cop said.
