Chapter 232 Afraid I’ll Abuse You?

Titus shot her a look and gave a silent nod of agreement. “Mm.”

Chiara paused for a moment, then said, “If you’re not feeling well, you should really go to the hospital.”

Titus sat down on the edge of the bed, took her hand, and gently rubbed it, his tone noticeably softer.

“Are you worried about me?” he asked.

Chiara didn’t shy away. Instead, she looked at him calmly and said, “You’re Ryan’s dad.”

She wanted him to stay healthy. for Ryan’s sake.

She couldn’t deny it. With Titus around, Ryan would have everything he needed to grow.

Titus would be the one Ryan could always count on.

After saying that, she was about to get out of bed when Titus pulled her into a gentle embrace from behind.

“You don’t want to forgive me?” he asked softly.

Chiara shot a quick glance at his arm wrapped around her waist, then said in a calm tone, “What are you talking about?”

Titus paused for a moment, then gave a wry, self-deprecating smile. “Seems like you’ve got more than a few complaints about me.”

“I didn’t keep the promise I made to you, and I regret it,” he said.

Chiara gently removed his arm and got out of bed, not responding to his words.

“Chiara, I’m sorry about everything with your grandpa,” Titus said quietly.

Chiara paused for a moment when she heard that, then turned to look at him.

“I don’t think you ever realized…” she started.

Titus’s eyes grew serious. “What didn’t I know?”

Chiara gave a faint smile. “My grandpa was really fond of you. He trusted you a lot,”

If he didn’t truly care, he wouldn’t have chosen to trust Titus again, even after Elaine made him so upset that he fainted that first time.

Titus’s face clouded over, his voice dropping. “I betrayed your grandpa’s trust.”

“That’s right, you did. If you hadn’t been so obsessed with your so-called responsibilities…” Chiara said, her disappointment

clear.

Titus’s gaze was deep and unreadable as he stood up, walked over, and looked at her cold, distant face.

“What can I do to break down the walls between us?” he asked softly.

Chiara met his gaze in silence and shook her head, helpless.

There was nothing he could do. Her grandpa’s death was like a nail hammered into her heart and soul. It was stuck there for good, impossible to remove.

“Once someone’s gone, they’re gone for good,” Chiara said quietly, her voice calm but resolute.

She summed it all up in that one sentence.

Titus’s expression grew somber as he stared at her, silent.

Chiara looked up at him one last time, her gaze calm and unwavering, then turned and walked away.

This time, Titus didn’t try to call her back. He just sat there, silently watching as she left the room, powerless to stop her.

Their bodies could be so intimately entwined, yet their hearts felt farther apart than ever.

When Chiara got home, she stood by Ryan’s bed, watching him sleep for a while before finally heading to the bathroom. After her shower, she picked up her phone and sent a text to Heather.

But Heather didn’t reply.

Chiara glanced at the clock. It was already past ten.

‘Is she still working overtime?’ Chiara wondered.

Before, no matter how busy Heather was, she’d always text back right away.

But after waiting for about half an hour, Heather still hadn’t replied.

Still worried, Chiara called Heather’s secretary.

“Hello, Charlotte? This is Chiara,” Chiara said.

“Hello, Ms. Lynch. How can I help you?” the secretary replied.

“Is Heather still at the office?” Chiara asked.

“She isn’t at the office. She clocked out early today with Mr. Bradford,” the secretary replied.

Chiara’s brows furrowed. “You mean they left together?”

“Yeah, that’s right.”

“Okay, thanks for your help. Bye,” Chiara said.

“Sure, Ms. Lynch. Bye.”

After hanging up, Chiara looked at Heather’s unread message, then called her.

But the first time, nobody picked up.

Chiara sat up slowly, phone still in hand, feeling uneasy.

She tried calling again.

And again, it rang for ages, but nobody answered.

Staring at her phone and biting her lip, Chiara was seriously considering whether she should just go check on Heather in

person.

Finally, Heather’s voice came through the phone.

“Hello? Chiara?” Heather said.

As soon as she heard Heather’s voice, Chiara felt her heart drop back to normal and let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding.

“Heather, why’d you take so long to answer?” Chiara asked.

“Hmm? What’s up?” Heather answered.

“Oh, it’s nothing, I just wanted to…” Chiara began, a little hesitant.

“Ah!”

Before Chiara could finish, she suddenly heard some unmistakably intimate sounds coming from Heather’s end of the line.

She instantly clammed up, stunned.

There was an awkward silence between the sisters for about five seconds before Heather finally spoke, her voice a little

rushed.

“Chiara, I’ll call you back in a bit…” Heather said, sounding urgent.

But before she could finish, the call got abruptly cut off.

Chiara stared at her phone, her expression a little weird. She was a mother, Of course, she knew those sounds.

She tossed her phone aside and rubbed her forehead, her feelings a mess. She couldn’t even tell what she was feeling.

Honestly, she just felt totally frustrated.

She’d always known Heather and Kason weren’t exactly innocent.

But that was back when she was still clueless about everything.

Now that she knew Kason could actually be out to get them….

She felt so suffocated, like there was something stuck in her throat she just couldn’t get rid of.

She believed if she was feeling this messed up, Heather must have been even worse off, like she was constantly on edge.

“Mommy…” Ryan murmured in his sleep.

Chiara glanced over at Ryan, set her phone aside, lay back down, and gently soothed him.

“Go to sleep, baby. Mommy’s always here for you,” Chiara whispered.

Meanwhile, Heather glanced at her phone, which Kason had just tossed onto the floor, then turned her head to look up at him.

Kason’s eyes were dark as he stared down at her. “Seriously, you’re picking up calls at a time like this?”

Heather shifted her gaze away, her voice cool. “If I don’t answer, she’ll get worried and probably drive over here herself. Is
