Chapter 235 We’re Not Going Back
Chapter 235 We’re Not Going Back
Just then, Ryan’s cheerful laughter floated down from above, and Adele smiled genuinely.
“Watching Ryan now, I can’t help but regret missing out on Titus’s childhood.”
Adele turned to Chiara beside her and gently patted her hand.
“Even though you two are apart now, and I know you won’t take him back, I still hope you can get along peacefully for Ryan’ s sake. I want him to grow up in a comfortable environment, with double the love from both his parents. I don’t want Ryan to end up like his dad, emotionally closed off,” Adele said softly.
“Emotionally closed off?” Chiara caught those words.
Adele nodded. “Yes, emotionally closed off.”
“It was probably his senior year of high school. The school organized a mental health screening, and I found his diagnosis report in his room. It said he had emotional deficits. He couldn’t tell if he liked or disliked someone. He treated everyone with just basic politeness and was always distant. Don’t you think he can be a bit too cold sometimes?” Adele asked.
Chiara thought back for a moment. “Sometimes…”
“Honestly, the only thing tying him to us is blood. He knows we’re his parents, so he shows respect and does what’s expected. But deep down, there’s no real emotional connection. Do you get what I’m saying?” Adele said.
Chiara was stunned, almost in disbelief.
“Seriously?” she blurted out.
“Bet you never noticed, huh? You just thought he was distant because Marcus was the one who raised him, didn’t you?” Adele added.
Chiara paused, then nodded. “Yeah…”
Adele shook her head with a gentle smile. “Honestly, I’m the only one who knows about this. His father and grandma have no clue, and even Titus probably doesn’t realize it.”
“Wait, really?” Chiara blurted out, surprised again.
“I went through depression myself, and it was hell. You never want to let anyone see your vulnerable side, so all these years, I just acted like I didn’t notice anything. But I’ve always known he’s been seeing a psychiatrist,” Adele admitted.
Chiara shook her head softly. “I never knew.”
“So when he suddenly said he wanted to marry you, I was honestly surprised. I asked him why, and he just said…”
Chiara tilted her head, listening as Adele said, “He just said he wanted to.”
Adele watched her for a few seconds, then asked tentatively, “Have you heard Serenity Jenson?”
Chiara’s eyes flickered, and her expression finally shifted as she nodded.
“Elaine’s sister?” Chiara asked.
Adele nodded. “So he’s told you about her?”
Chiara nodded as well.
“Serenity was the first girl he ever dated. At that time, he was still really closed off emotionally, but somehow he still got together with her. Honestly, I was pretty surprised when I found out,” Adele admitted.
Adele fell silent after that. Chiara watched her for a few seconds, and once she realized the conversation had suddenly ended, she looked away as well.
But Chiara wasn’t sure why Adele suddenly brought up Serenity out of nowhere.
The boat slowly came to a stop, and Adele stood up from her chair.
“I’ve always known he’s been seeing a therapist, but I’ve never met the doctor myself. But once, I saw the word ‘guilt’ written in his study. Maybe that’s something his therapist is helping him work through, or it’s part of his diagnosis.” Titus was born into a life where he never really knew what it was like to want something the way regular people do.
Family, good looks, privilege, power, he had all of it handed to him from day one.

had turned cold.
That’s probably why Adele figured his therapist tried to work with guilt, because greed, love, even hate were all things Titus

could get without even trying.
For Titus, guilt was the one emotion that truly made him seem human. and yet, it was the one feeling he could never really
grasp.
When Serenity died, that guilt hit him hard.
Adele had come to this conclusion after she’d once asked her own therapist about it.
“As far as I know, he hasn’t seen that therapist in years, Adele said.
Adele was sure the therapist’s methods had helped. He’d managed to get back some of his feelings, at least a little.
But it seemed that not all of them have been recovered.
Titus came over with Ryan in his arms, and with a gentle touch, he took out a tissue from his pocket and wiped the sweat from Ryan’s forehead.
‘Emotionally closed off?’ Chiara wondered. Honestly, she’d never noticed anything like that.
To her, he’d always just seemed a little cold by nature, nothing more.
She glanced over at Adele, who simply smiled back at her.
Titus noticed the silent look between them and arched an eyebrow.
“What were you two just talking about?” he asked.
“We were just talking about you,” Adele said.
“Me? My past?” Titus asked, glancing at Chiara and noticing her shift in mood
“Just how you always kept to yourself, never really close to us, and you never begged us to take you to preschool,” Adele added.
Titus paused for a moment, then turned to Ryan. “Ryan, what do you want to play next?”
Ryan glanced around, then pointed excitedly at something.
Titus followed his finger, then turned to Chiara. “Want to join us?”
Adele sat back down. “You two go ahead.”
Seeing the hopeful look in Ryan’s eyes, Chiara nodded.
Ryan’s face lit up instantly.
But as they played, Titus could tell Chiara had something weighing on her mind.
He glanced at her a few times, then looked away.
When they were done, he handed Ryan over to Charlie.
Charlie was more than happy to take over. He’d been planning to play with Ryan himself if Titus hadn’t shown up. After watching Charlie and Ryan walk off together, Titus finally turned to Chiara and asked, “What did my mom just say to you?”
Chiara tilted her head and blinked at him. “Didn’t I just tell you? We were talking about when you were a kid.”
“What exactly did she say?” Titus pressed.
Chiara turned to look ahead. “She said you were raised by my grandfather, so you never really got close to them. She feels like she owes you for that, and she hopes we can get along so Ryan can grow up happy and loved.”
