Chapter 266
Chapter 266
The reporter immediately followed up, “Didn’t you go to the hotel with a model last night? Surely you remember that, right?”
Kason actually remembered. He turned his head and flicked the ash from his cigarette. He had assumed the remark was about him and Heather, only to realize it referred to this instead.
“Oh, now that you bring it up, I do remember,” Kason said.
“So, Mr. Bradford, are you gonna buy these photos off me?” the reporter pressed.
These reporters were little more than paparazzi, forever lurking in the shadows to capture celebrities and public figures in their most private moments, all for hardly noble motives.
At the end of the day, it was all about money. Ethics meant nothing to them. People who lived off exposing others’ secrets had no moral bottom line, so going straight to the target made sense. If they were willing to pay, that was enough.
“Did you just say you contacted my wife?” Kason asked, his eyes narrowing as he sized up the reporter.
The reporter paused, then stammered, “Oh, I just said that. Honestly, I’d reach out to you first, Mr. Bradford. I only mentioned her because I figured you might ignore a nobody like me.”
“Really?” Kason replied, sounding skeptical.
“Of course!” the reporter insisted, but truth be told, he honestly had no clue. Every time he’d tried to stir up a scandal about Kason before, it had fizzled out without a trace.
It seemed like Kason just shrugged off all that tabloid drama, totally unfazed. There was no money to be made, so he switched tactics.
“Mr. Bradford?” the reporter asked tentatively.
Kason had really brought a woman to the hotel last night, but before they even went inside, he gave her money and told her to leave quietly through the back door. He did it all on purpose, just so the paparazzi could get their shots.
But just thinking about how Heather looked at him with such loathing last night made Kason take a long, hard drag on his cigarette. Then he remembered the text from Greta earlier. ‘Had she really skipped breakfast too?’ Kason wondered.
He stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray, his voice low and rough. “How much do you want?”
“Not much, just thirty thousand dollars. I know that’s pocket change for you, Mr. Bradford,” the reporter replied.
“Account number,” Kason said curtly.
“You got it! Sending it right now!” The reporter hung up, practically bouncing with excitement as he shot over his bank details.
After Kason transferred the money, he scoffed. The photos came through, but he barely glanced at them before deleting them.
Gael pushed the door open and tossed the clothes onto the bed. “Heading to the office?” he asked.
Kason shot him a look, tossed off the covers, and got out of bed. “Yeah, I’m going. Did you find out what I wanted you to
check?”
“Yeah, I did. Your old flame really did get married. Her husband comes from a pretty influential political family. She was able to marry them because she got pregnant, though she ended up miscarrying,” Gael replied.
Chapter 266
At the office, Heather was in the middle of a conversation with her secretary when the door opened abruptly.
Charlotte turned, her expression shifting just a bit, then shot Heather a quick look. “Ms. Lynch, I’ll step out now,” she said.
Heather nodded. “Alright.”
As Charlotte walked past Kason, she gave him a polite nod.
Heather looked at him, her face unreadable, and the anger she’d shown last night was nowhere to be seen. ‘No way she got over it that fast,’ Kason thought. ‘She must just be holding it all in.
“Is there something you need?” Heather asked, her voice cool and distant.
Kason had changed into a dark blue suit, his hands casually tucked in his pockets as he looked at her. “Have you eaten?” he asked.
Heather didn’t want to get drawn into anything with him, so she answered with a hint of sarcasm, “Really, Mr. Bradford? Do you care about little things like this now? Well, you don’t have to bother, I’ve already eaten.”
“Oh, really? But Greta told me you skipped breakfast,” Kason said, raising an eyebrow like he already knew the answer.
Heather paused, then shot him a look. “What, I can’t just eat on the way or grab something at work?”
“Is that so? Then tell me, what exactly did you eat?” Kason asked, his tone skeptical as he stared her down.
Heather furrowed her brows in irritation and smacked her pen down on the desk. “Seriously, do you actually need something or not?” she snapped.
Kason gave her a faint smile after a few seconds. “Nothing, really. But I was thinking, I’d like to have lunch with my wife today. That shouldn’t be a problem, right?”
Heather didn’t respond, just looked at him, expressionless. Kason shot her a couple more glances before turning and heading out.
Heather clenched her fists. ‘Lunch with him? Please. Honestly, I’d rather starve than sit across from that guy, she thought.
As Kason walked out of Heather’s office, he turned to Charlotte. “Please make sure to remind Ms. Lynch to have lunch with me today,” he said.
Charlotte figured it was a pretty reasonable request. Those two acted like they were barely civil, and their relationship was pretty distant lately, but they still ended up sleeping together most nights.
‘Lunch together shouldn’t be a problem, right?’ Charlotte mused.
“Of course, Mr. Bradford. I’ll make sure to remind Ms. Lynch,” she replied.
But when noon came, and Charlotte reminded Heather about lunch with Kason, she couldn’t miss how clearly irritated Heather looked. Charlotte, who’d worked with Heather for years, was honestly surprised.
Heather kept a professional distance from the staff, yet her generosity with bonuses and benefits spoke for itself. Even when facing difficult business partners, Charlotte had never seen her display such open irritation.
“Ms. Lynch?” Charlotte spoke, sounding hesitant.
“I’ve got a lunch appointment. You’re coming with me,” Heather said, her voice cool and firm.
“Oh, okay…” Charlotte replied, a bit flustered.
15:10 Wed, Jan 14 GM.
Chapter 266
Heather took her secretary and left, so when Jasper came looking for them, he realized the office was empty; they were nowhere to be found.
Gael had no choice but to call Charlotte. “Charlotte, where are you and Ms. Lynch?” he asked.
“Oh, Gael, Ms. Lynch is having lunch with a client. We’re not at the office anymore,” she said.
“Alright, got it. Bye. Gael hung up and walked away.
Kason scoffed. “Ask them where Heather is having lunch with her client and text me the location.”
Gael shot him a look. “Alright.”
When Charlotte saw the message, she hesitated. She glanced at Heather, hoping to get her permission before replying. But Heather was deep in conversation and way too busy to even look up.
Charlotte ended up sending over a location pin, but it wasn’t the exact spot-just somewhere in the area, playing it safe just
in case.
It turned out they were simply spending time at a café, meeting a familiar face for lunch: Wayne Pierce.
“So, how’s Chiara doing these days?” Wayne asked, sounding genuinely concerned.
Heather glanced at him. “You haven’t talked to her lately?”
“We’ve talked a few times,” Wayne replied. He’d been tied up with work overseas for a while now.
Lately, he couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was pulling strings to keep him out of Halinston on purpose, making sure he couldn’t come back.
“So, uh… Chiara and Titus. Are they, like, a thing now or what?” Wayne asked, trailing off, clearly unsure how to phrase it.
Heather shook her head calmly. “If you really want to know, it’s better to ask Chiara directly.”
Wayne couldn’t help but give a bitter chuckle, then took a sip of his coffee.
“I’ve had a thing for her since college, you know? But I never found the right moment to tell her how I felt. Guess I was just too timid, afraid she’d shoot me down,” Wayne said with a wry smile.
Heather sat there quietly, letting him talk. “She turned down so many guys during those years. I kept thinking, if I ever crossed that line and confessed, we’d probably end up not even being friends.”
Heather lowered her gaze and took a sip of her coffee. She knew why Chiara kept turning guys down. She was already into someone else.
“I always figured I’d talk to her after graduation, you know? But then, out of nowhere, she went and got married, and to Titus, of all people. Looks like I was just too late…” Wayne said.
‘Honestly, I can’t be sure, Heather thought. ‘If Wayne had confessed back then, maybe Chiara would’ve been touched enough to give him a chance.’
“Guess me and Chiara are just never gonna happen, huh?” Wayne said with a wry smile, sounding pretty resigned.
Heather didn’t say anything, but deep down, she knew he was probably right.
Titus was clearly still not over Chiara, and they were even talking about having another baby together. It was a tangled mess, one that no one ever truly managed to end or straighten out.
