Chapter 271
Chapter 271
“Mr. Yates, you can go in, but you’ll need to put on a protective suit. It’s for your own safety, the nurse said.
Jeffrey glanced at the woman in the hospital room, then finally nodded. “Hurry up,” he said.
“Yes, right away!” the nurse replied.
The nurse brought over two protective suits. Once they were both suited up, the nurse finally opened the door to the hospital room.
Elaine’s room was rarely opened. Even when meals or medicine were delivered, they were just passed through the small gap at the bottom of the door.
But when she was first transferred here, it was no easy task. She was a patient with a contagious disease who never cooperated and could start screaming hysterically at any time.
Taking care of her was a total nightmare. That was why this was a high-security isolation room.
There were several ventilation ducts overhead that could pump in tranquilizer gas whenever Elaine lost control and started freaking out. Otherwise, the medical staff wouldn’t dare set foot inside.
One time, a nurse got scratched by her and had to rush to the hospital for a preventive shot. She was on pins and needles for days, but luckily, the tests showed she was fine.
But after three months of professional treatment and therapy, she wasn’t nearly as resistant or out of control as she used to be. When the door opened, and Jeffrey walked in, Elaine didn’t even seem to notice him.
She was totally caught up in her wild scribbles; the things she drew looked twisted and terrifying. “Elaine,” Jeffrey called out
But she didn’t pay him any attention, totally lost in her own world. The nurse, seeing that, reminded him, “Mr. Yates, calling her by name doesn’t work here. You have to use her number.”
Then the nurse gave him an example, “Number 32!”
Sure enough, Elaine, who hadn’t reacted at all before, suddenly looked up. But her face was empty, her eyes unfocused, as if her gaze couldn’t settle on anything.
She still didn’t seem to notice Jeffrey, just kept her eyes fixed on the nurse. “Alright, time for your meds,” the nurse said.
The nurse glanced at Jeffrey and explained, “That’s when we usually call them medication time.” With that, she pulled a piece of candy out of her pocket and tossed it onto Serenity’s bed.
Elaine picked it up, popped it into her mouth, and chewed without emotion. She didn’t care if it was sweet or bitter, all that mattered was following orders and taking her medicine.
Jeffrey’s eyes darkened as he stared at Elaine for a long time, then finally spoke to the nurse. “Could you leave us alone for a while?” Jeffrey said, his voice low.
The nurse glanced at Serenity, then double-checked the iron chain locked around her ankle to make sure it was secure.
“Mr. Yates, the chain on her ankle only lets her move just enough for her to reach the bathroom. Please keep a safe distance,” the nurse cautioned him.
Jeffrey nodded, and only then did the nurse finally feel safe enough to turn and leave. He stopped at a safe distance, quietly watching Serenity.
But Elaine was nothing like an ordinary person anymore. She was so thin she was almost a shadow of her former self; there

was nothing left of the woman she used to be.
When they found her three months ago, she looked less than human. No one could even recognize her at first glance.
He brought her in, and the doctors said she was out of her mind, all because of what she’d suffered. As for what she’d been through, one could only imagine. After all, the medical reports said it all.
Jeffrey didn’t think Elaine had anything to do with Ryan’s kidnapping. After all, someone locked up in a place like this, with no freedom at all, wouldn’t be able to do anything even if she wanted to.
It was Paul’s call that brought him here.
Elaine kept her head down, lost in her own world, mindlessly sketching as if he were invisible to her. In the end, Jeffrey turned and left the room without saying a word.
So when the door closed behind him, Elaine’s movements stilled for just a heartbeat, then she went right back to what she was doing.
She tilted her head and kept drawing, a strange smile seeming to curl at the corner of her mouth. Her hand flew across the page, faster and faster…
Suddenly, police cars were everywhere in the city. People thought something major was going down, but the authorities claimed it was just a training exercise.
Chiara looked like she’d lost her soul, slumped in her chair, while Titus kept her hand in his, refusing to let go.
Paul came running over, sweating bullets. He glanced at Chiara, then shook his head at Titus, still, nothing. In other words, there was still no news. They were still searching…
Lena was clearly ready for this; she took Ryan and managed to dodge every single camera in the area.
She must’ve roamed the place way ahead of time, figured out where every camera was, and slipped past them with almost boring precision.
That left them with nothing but the cameras inside the hospital, no other clues to work with. Finding her just got a whole lot tougher.
Suddenly, Chiara buried her face in her hands, sobbing. “I never should’ve come back. I never should’ve come back…” she whispered, her voice breaking.
Titus’s eyes were cold and dark. He didn’t think Lena was just after the kid. Even if the cops couldn’t find her right now, he knew she’d reach out eventually.
If she were really after him, then Ryan would be safe, for now. But he didn’t bother saying any of this to Chiara; she wouldn’t listen anyway.
Just then, a cop came running over. “We’ve got a clue,” he said.
Heather immediately looked up at the sound, instinctively trying to get to her feet, but her knees buckled, and she nearly collapsed, her head spinning. Titus kept her from falling, holding her steady, and only then did he turn to the cop.
“We found this outfit in a trash can 1.2 miles away,” the cop
said.
Paul grabbed the clothes, and the moment he saw them, he knew; they were Lena’s work uniform from kindergarten.
“Mr. Goodman, Ms. Lynch, we’re increasing patrols and searching the whole area,” the cop said.
Chiara’s face was ghostly pale, her eyes rimmed red from crying for hours. “Thank you. Please, find my son as soon as you can. I’m begging you…” she choked out, her voice trembling.

Chapter 271
“Hang in there, we’ll find your boy as soon as we can,” the cop reassured her.
When Jeffrey showed up, he glanced at Chiara’s pale, shaken state, then shot a look at Titus. But he just said, “It’s not her?
Titus shot him a cold look and didn’t say a word. Paul leaned in and whispered to Jeffrey, “It was Lena who snatched Ryan.”
Jeffrey raised an eyebrow. ‘Wait, Lena? That’s unexpected. So she’s targeting someone again?’ he thought.
He shot a look at Titus, but kept his mouth shut. If it were anything else, he’d definitely have something snarky to say. But with Ryan’s safety at stake, he kept his mouth shut.
There was no way to keep it under wraps; Charlie and Adele showed up in a flash. The moment Charlie saw Titus, he slapped him hard across the face.

Charlie was furious, jabbing a finger at Titus. “You can’t even protect your own son? What kind of father are you? I might’ve been a lousy dad, but I never let anything happen to you when you were a kid.
“Titus, I’m warning you. If anything happens to my grandson, I swear I’ll…”
Adele was just as frantic. “Enough with the tough talk! If you’re so capable, go bring Ryan back yourself!”
Charlie’s face was stormy, but at this point, everybody, the cops, crooks were out there. The whole city was hunting for Ryan and Lena.
Adele walked up to Chiara and wrapped her arms around her. It was clear Adele had been crying too, but she still managed to comfort Chiara.
“It’s alright, sweetheart. I truly believe Ryan will be just fine,” Adele whispered.
Chiara slowly closed her eyes, but the tears just kept falling.
