Chapter 279
Chapter 279
“Chiara, you’re awake! Great news, Ryan’s fine, and he’s not hurt at all!” Heather exclaimed.
As soon as she heard those words, Chiara felt a rush of relief, and tears welled up in her eyes. She shut her eyes for a moment and gripped Heather’s hand tightly. “Where’s Ryan?” Chiara asked.
“Let’s go get Ryan and bring him home!” Heather said.
When they got to the police station, Lena was sitting there, her face ghostly pale and her hands cuffed, being grilled by the cops. The moment Chiara walked in, Lena just kept staring at her, totally fixated.
“Answer the question! Eyes over here!” one of the officers snapped.
Lena flinched, her shoulders hunched in fear. And when she saw Elaine being wheeled out under a white sheet, she was totally shell-shocked.

Now she finally understood what she’d done, but it was way too late for fear or regret. One mistake, and everything just kept spiraling out of control.
Under police questioning, Lena finally came clean and laid out everything that had happened, leaving nothing out.
Ryan was fast asleep in Titus’s arms, finally at peace after a terrifying night. Now that he was back with his dad, he just crashed.
“Mr. Goodman, why don’t you put the kid down on the couch? Holding him like that must be tiring,” one of the officers suggested.
Titus shook his head, still holding Ryan close. “No need.”
The door to the chief’s office swung open, and Chiara’s gaze instantly found Ryan, fast asleep on Titus’s shoulder. Chiara whispered, “Ryan…”
Titus’s eyes softened when he saw her. He spoke quietly, “He just fell asleep a little while ago.”
Chiara sat down beside him, her eyes lingering on Ryan’s fair, peaceful face. Her hand trembled as she reached out to hold her son’s tiny hand. Only when she saw Ryan safe and sound, felt the warmth of his little hand, did Chiara finally let go of all her worries.
Charlie and Adele let out a huge sigh of relief when they saw that Titus and Ryan were both safe. “As long as you’re all safe. that’s all that matters,” Adele said softly.
Chiara didn’t know what exactly had happened during Ryan’s rescue, but she looked Titus over with concern and asked softly, “Are you alright?”
Hearing her genuine concern, Titus felt a gentle warmth in his heart, Something that used to be within reach now felt like a Juxury he had to crave.
“I’m fine, don’t worry,” Titus replied.
But then Chiara spotted traces of blood on the back of Titus’s hand. Noticing where she was looking. Titus glanced down and brushed it off. “It’s nothing, just got scratched up a bit.”
Jeffrey was approaching the office door when he overheard the conversation. He walked in at once, his gaze zeroing in on Titus’s scratched hand, and his face instantly grew serious.
“Did Elaine do that?” Jeffrey asked, his voice sharp and cold. His tone was so cutting that everyone turned to stare at him. Even Titus looked over, surprised.

Chapter 279
Jeffrey’s lips pressed into a thin line as he met everyone’s gaze, his voice coming out hoarse and heavy. “She was found to have AIDS,” he said.
His words landed like a bombshell. “What?” Adele’s face drained of color as she stared at the scratches on Titus’s hand. “Quick, quick, we need to get to the hospital!” she cried out.
Chiara froze, her eyes widening in shock as she stared at the scratches on Titus’s hand, unable to believe what she was seeing. “AIDS?” she blurted out, her voice shaking.
Jeffrey looked serious. “You need to get to the hospital and get the emergency blocker shot, now!”
“Yes, yes, hurry! Stop standing around, get to the hospital, quick!” Adele urged, her voice frantic.
Chiara snapped out of it and reached for Ryan, but Titus pulled back a little and turned to Charlie instead. Charlie understood right away. He just pressed his lips together, trying not to show any emotion.
Charlie stepped up and took Ryan into his arms, his tone dead serious. “Is my grandson really safe?” Charlie demanded.
Titus stayed silent because he really wasn’t sure. Adele was on the verge of tears, practically stomping her foot in panic.
“Why are you all just standing here? Move! Get to the hospital, hurry!” she cried out.
The group hurried straight to the infectious disease ward at the hospital. Once the doctor understood the situation, he gave Titus the strongest blocker shot right away, with no hesitation.
As for Ryan, the 24-hour window hadn’t closed yet, but they were really cutting it close. The doctor didn’t waste a second; regardless of whether Ryan had actually been exposed, they gave him the blocker shot right away, just in case.
They also took blood samples from both Titus and Ryan to run tests. “Mr. Goodman, you’ll need to take the blocker pills for 28 days. During that time, it’s best to avoid any close contact with others,” the doctor said.
Titus nodded, glancing down at the scratch on his hand. He looked up and saw Chiara standing just outside the room, her eyes locked on him, worry written all over her face.
Not wanting her to worry, Titus gave her a gentle smile and mouthed two words to her. “I’m fine.”
Chiara understood what he mouthed, but her anxiety wouldn’t let go; she clenched her fists tight, trying to steady herself. She shifted her gaze to the doctors, who were now examining Ryan after giving him the blocker shot.
The two doctors slipped on magnifying lenses and meticulously scanned every inch of Ryan, searching for any cuts, scratches, or needle marks. They went over him again and again, but came up empty.
“Ms. Lynch, we haven’t found any visible wounds or needle marks on your son. He should be alright, but we’ll need to monitor him for the next 28 days. After that, we’ll run another blood test just to make sure,” the doctor reassured her.
Chiara could finally breathe a little easier. She knew exactly how AIDS was transmitted, so when the doctor said there were no visible wounds, some of that crushing anxiety finally loosened its grip on her.
Jeffrey glanced at Ryan, who was still out cold in Charlie’s arms. He’d slept right through the blood draw. Then he finally looked over at Chiara.
She looked exhausted, her eyes puffy and red from crying all night. Jeffrey pressed his lips together and said quietly, “I’m sorry. I’m responsible for what happened, and I can’t run from that.”
Chiara finally turned to look at him.
“Back then, Titus had someone hurt Elaine so badly. Her pelvis and spine were crushed; she’s disabled for life now. Then he made the hospital throw her out, and after that, she got abducted and went through hell.
Chapter 279
“I tracked her down and brought her back, and that’s how she ended up plotting with Lena to kidnap Ryan. Chiara, I’m really sorry for all of this,” Jeffrey said, his voice thick with guilt.
After that, Jeffrey turned to Charlie and Adele, bowing deeply to them. “I’m truly sorry. Ryan suffered for no reason because of what I did,” he said, his voice thick with regret.
Charlie and Adele just stood there, not knowing what to say. They’d watched Jeffrey grow up, and they just couldn’t bring themselves to say anything harsh. All they could do was sigh and shake their heads, helpless.
Chiara zoned out for a moment, her mind drifting. She really had no clue how Titus had handled Elaine after everything that happened.
She’d always thought the two of them would just cut ties and move on, but she never expected Titus would be the one to destroy Elaine himself.
“If you bring disaster to yourself, you have to face the consequences,” Chiara said.
Jeffrey didn’t deny that Elaine had brought this fate upon herself. Getting shot by the police, well, she had it coming.
Titus stepped out of the treatment room, his gaze drifting over everyone before finally settling on Chiara, his eyes gentle. “I won’t be coming home next month,” he said.
Chiara blurted out without thinking, “Then where are you going to stay?”
“I’ll stay at a hotel,” Titus replied.
No one had any objections to his suggestion; after all, Elaine had actually scratched his hand.
Even though he had received the blocker shot within two hours, when it should have been effective, there had never been a hundred percent guarantee, and some risk had remained. Staying at a hotel had truly been the best move.
Titus looked over at Ryan again, clearly worried. Adele noticed and reassured him.
“The doctor just checked Ryan and said there aren’t any wounds on him. But to be extra safe, he’ll keep taking blocker meds, and in 28 days we’ll do another blood test,” Adele explained.
Titus watched his son, who was asleep for a while before finally nodding.
