Chapter 283
Chapter 283
“Defendant, please remain silent. This is a court of law. No loud outbursts are allowed. If you object to today’s verdict, you may file an appeal. The court is adjourned,” the judge said.
“No. I don’t want life in prison. I don’t want it!” Lena shouted.
It was only now that Lena truly panicked and felt afraid. Every day in detention felt like an eternity. Now she finally knew what prison felt like.
Lena had thought the worst she’d get was ten or fifteen years, but she never imagined she’d get slammed with such a heavy
sentence.
Clearly, someone had pulled some strings. Lena wasn’t clueless.
Someone didn’t want her to ever get out. They wanted her to rot in prison.
She wasn’t about to take it lying down. Of course, she was terrified.
“I won’t accept this. I won’t!” Lena screamed, her voice trembling with desperation.
Lena turned to look at the row of people seated in the courtroom.
Every face was familiar to her.
There was the guy she couldn’t help but love and hate, the woman she always envied and felt jealous of, and her former coworkers, Paul and Queenie.
Right now, they all wore looks of relief and vengeance, like they’d been waiting for this moment to finally see her fall.
Suddenly, Lena found herself hating every single one of them.
“Titus, Chiara, if I’d known it would end up like this, we should’ve all died together in that explosion. That bitch Elaine was absolutely worthless,” Lena shouted.
Lena was so hysterical that the prison guards had no choice but to step in and restrain her.
Chiara watched Lena expressionlessly. Seeing Lena’s face contorted with hatred, she stood up from the gallery.
Chiara tilted her head and glanced at the person next to her. “Let’s go,” she said.
Titus looked over at her, his eyes soft and attentive, the very picture of a man hopelessly devoted to his wife.
“Okay,” Titus replied.
Titus reached out his hand to her. After a moment’s hesitation, Chiara slipped her hand into his.
Paul and Queenie exchanged knowing glances, smirking at each other.
Paul nudged her and said, “Alright, let’s go.”
“Don’t go. You can’t leave. Titus, Titus!” Lena screamed, her voice raw with desperation.
Lena watched as Titus and Chiara walked out hand in hand, feeling like she’d always been the punchline of a cruel joke.
And now, because of that joke, she’d thrown away her whole life.
Lena’s eyes were bloodshot, locked onto the backs of Titus and Chiara as they were about to leave the courtroom. She

looked like she was ready to tear them apart.
She caught sight of the guard’s pistol at his hip and, without warning, slammed her foot down on his toes.
The guard, totally unprepared, cried out in pain, and his hands flew open.
Lena didn’t hesitate. She grabbed the gun right off his belt.
Guards always carried guns and ammo when escorting prisoners. Even though nobody really tries to break out these days, they still keep a pistol on them, in case.
But Lena saw her chance and took it.
“Watch out!” someone shouted from behind.

Hearing the shout, Chiara instinctively tried to turn around, but before she could, someone stepped in front of her, blocking her view completely.
She couldn’t see a thing, but then, out of nowhere, a deafening gunshot exploded in her ears.
“Ah!” Queenie screamed.
Queenie was just a few steps away. She saw Titus move behind Chiara, blocking the bullet fired by Lena. The sight made her let out a terrified scream, her face going deathly pale.
“Mr. Goodman!” Queenie cried out.
Even Paul was stunned. He stood there, wide-eyed and speechless for several seconds, just staring at the shocking scene unfolding before him.
Lena was quickly pinned down again. The two guards looked like they were about to explode, practically itching to put her down right then and there.
“Snatching a gun and trying to kill someone right here in court? You must have a death wish!” one of the guards yelled.
Lena was pinned to the table, laughing as she’d completely lost her mind, her tears streaming down as the laughter turned almost hysterical.
Lena said, “Getting life in prison is even worse than dying. I know exactly what Titus can do. I’m sure there’s the whole hell of nasty surprises waiting for me in there.
“I don’t want to live anymore. If I’m going down, all of you are coming with me…”
The judge had never seen anything like this before. His face went ashen
“Get her out of here!” the judge barked.
As Lena was dragged away, her eyes stayed glued to Titus’s back. Even now, he stood firm behind Chiara, like an unbreakable shield. Nothing could shake him.
That shot was aimed straight at Chiara.
He really took the bullet for Chiara.
Lena started laughing like a lunatic, the sound echoing through the courtroom.
Chiara was totally out of it. Her mind went blank as the gunshot kept echoing in her head.
Her lips were trembling, but then a warm palm landed gently on the top of her head, comforting her.

“I’m fine. Don’t worry,” Titus said softly.

Queenie was standing right next to Titus, and when she saw blood gushing from his left shoulder, her voice went shrill and thin, almost breaking with panic.
“M… Mr. Goodman, you… you’ve been shot! There’s so much blood…” Queenie stammered, her words trembling in the air.
When Chiara heard the word “blood,” her mind froze. ‘Blood?’ she thought, dazed. She automatically glanced down. Sure enough, the floor beneath Titus was soaked in red.
Even her own shoes were covered in blood.
“You…” Chiara stammered, her voice trembling.
“Don’t look. I’m really fine,” Titus said.
But even as Titus spoke, his breath was already faltering, his strength fading. Still, he managed to lift his hand and gently shield her eyes.
And in the very next instant, his body gave out. Titus crumpled to the ground, collapsing without warning.
Paul finally snapped out of it and rushed over to catch Titus before he hit the floor. He was pale as a sheet and gave Queenie a sharp look.
“What are you standing there for? Call Dr. Shaw, now!” Paul shouted.
The court staff finally sprang into action, rushing over to help. Several of them worked together to get Titus into the court vehicle.
Since it was an official car, they could blow through red lights. It was way faster than any regular ride.
Paul was so shaken by Titus getting shot that he couldn’t even spare a thought for Chiara. His heart nearly stopped from the shock.
He couldn’t wrap his head around what kind of chaos would erupt in the company if Titus didn’t make it.
If that happened, the whole city would never be the same.
Paul watched as Titus’s face grew even paler, his face slick with cold sweat. Paul’s own clothes were soaked through, the warmth of Titus’s blood seeping into his skin.
“Hurry up. Step on it!” Paul shouted, his voice cracking with urgency.
Chiara just stood there in a daze, staring blankly at the spreading pool of blood on the floor.
Queenie was already drenched in cold sweat from the shock, but she still reached out to steady Chiara, turning her gently away from the bloody scene.
“Chiara, are you… are you okay?” Queenie asked, her voice trembling.
Chiara’s gaze was frozen at the exact moment Titus hit the ground. She still couldn’t make sense of how everything had gone so horribly wrong in a heartbeat.
“Queenie?” Chiara’s voice trembled, lost and searching for something to hold onto.
Queenie’s hand was clammy as she squeezed Chiara’s fingers, swallowing nervously. “I’m here, Chiara. I’m right here,” she said, her voice shaky but trying to sound reassuring.
“Queenie, what… what just happened to Titus?” Chiara stammered, her voice shaky and lost, eyes still fixed on the spot where

he fell.
Queenie was so stunned by Chiara’s question that she couldn’t even find the words. ‘Girl, are you for real? What else could it possibly be?’ she thought.
Chiara stared at her, totally spaced out, like her brain was buffering forever before she finally started to understand.
“Why did he get shot?” Chiara muttered, her voice shaky and lost, as if she couldn’t wrap her head around what had happened.
Chiara might’ve missed it, but Queenie saw everything go down, clear as day.
Queenie saw Lena raise the gun, but the whole thing was so shocking she couldn’t even get a word out. She was frozen in
terror.
She saw exactly who Lena was aiming for. It was Chiara.
Titus jumped in front of Chiara so fast, way quicker than anyone else could even process what was happening.
If Titus hadn’t moved like lightning, that bullet would’ve hit Chiara for sure.
Given how much taller Titus was than Chiara, Lena was actually aiming right at Chiara’s head.
The thought sent chills down Queenie’s spine. She’d never experienced anything like this before, especially since this was happening for real, not in some movies.
Queenie was so shaken by what she saw, she just couldn’t keep it to herself anymore. She blurted out the truth.
“That bullet was aimed right at you. Mr. Goodman jumped in and took it for you…” Queenie’s voice was trembling, still in shock as she finally said it out loud.
