Chapter 284
Chapter 284
Charlie and Adele rushed over as soon as they heard the news.
Paul had managed to calm down by then. When he saw them, he stepped forward to explain.
Paul said, “Mr. and Mrs. Goodman, after the trial ended, Lena refused to accept the verdict and grabbed a security guard’s gun right there in the courtroom.
“Mr. Goodman was shot in the back and has been in surgery for almost an hour now. Dr. Shaw is in there with him, but we still have no idea about his condition.”
Adele squeezed her eyes shut for a moment, clutching Charlie’s hand tightly.
“How could this happen?” she whispered.
Paul managed a weak smile, at a loss for words. No one really knew what to say in a situation like this.
Who would’ve thought Lena would actually dare to open fire in court?
For once, Charlie looked truly tense and grim. Even if he and Titus weren’t close, Titus was still his flesh and blood, the only son he had.
If something really went wrong…
Adele slowly opened her eyes and saw Queenie and Chiara sitting on the chairs outside the operating room.
Queenie was right beside Chiara, who was totally spaced out, her mind somewhere far away.
Queenie gently squeezed her hand and whispered, “Chiara, Mr. and Mrs. Goodman are here.”
Chiara blinked, as if snapping back to herself. She turned to look at the couple, opened her mouth, but couldn’t get any words out.
Her mind was still blank, unable to process anything.
All Chiara could see, both in front of her and replaying in her mind, was that shocking pool of blood and the moment Titus went down.
Adele walked over and sat down beside her, gently patting her shoulder.
“Don’t worry. I know Titus will be alright,” Adele said softly.
Paul had only explained that Titus was shot, but he didn’t say anything about how it actually happened.
Chiara’s eyes flickered, her expression dazed. But she managed to speak.
I’m sorry, Adele. That bullet was supposed to hit me. He… He jumped in front of me and took it instead. L. Chiara stammered, her voice trembling.
Adele paused, then quickly hugged Chiara tightly.
“You don’t have to say anything, honey. I understand. It’s not your fault. He made that decision himself, Adele said softly.
But Chiara’s heart kept aching, each throb a painful reminder.
Just then, the operating room doors swung open, and a nurse hurried out.

Chapter 284
Queenie jumped up and rushed over, grabbing the nurse’s arm.
“Nurse, how’s Mr. Goodman doing?” Queenie asked anxiously.
The nurse glanced at them, pulled off her mask, and her brows furrowed in concern.
The nurse said, “The bullet’s in a poor spot, dangerously close to his heart. The surgery is risky. He’s lost a lot of blood. I need to get more from the blood bank. The blood we gave him isn’t enough. I’m sorry.”
With that, the nurse hurried off, and the operating room doors closed behind her.
Queenie was about to say something, but instinctively looked at Chiara, who sat there ghostly pale and hollow-eyed, like she’d been hollowed out inside.
Adele squeezed Chiara’s hand even tighter, her eyes rimmed with tears.
Charlie walked a few steps away and dialed his phone, his face still grim.
Before long, the hospital director showed up with a team of specialists, who quickly changed into scrubs and headed into the operating room one after another.
Just then, Paul’s phone started ringing. He glanced at the caller ID and immediately sensed that word about Titus’s incident had started to spread.
“Hello, Mr. Edwin Daugherty…” Paul answered, trying to keep his voice steady.
“Where did you hear that? How could that be? I’m right here with Mr. Goodman, really. Please don’t worry,” Paul said. forcing himself to sound reassuring.
After hanging up, Paul turned to Charlie and quietly said, “Mr. Charlie, it seems the news about what happened has leaked out.”
After all, Titus had been rushed into the hospital covered in blood. Anyone keeping an eye out would recognize him.
Charlie’s expression was grim. “Don’t worry. As long as I’m still here, nothing’s going to fall apart.”
Paul finally felt a bit more at ease, but he couldn’t help worrying. Charlie and Titus had totally different ways of running the
company.
He was honestly a little worried Charlie might not be able to handle all the mess Titus left behind.
But having Charlie around was still better than nothing. Even after all these years out of the spotlight, Charlie still carried that commanding presence.
Right now, Chiara felt ice cold all over. She thought, ‘His heart? How could the bullet end up so close to his heart?
‘Didn’t he get shot in the back? How did it end up at his heart?’
“How could it be his heart?” Chiara murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
Hearing her mutter, Queenie gently explained, “Lena aimed that bullet straight at your head. Everything happened so fast, and there wasn’t even time to warn you. Mr. Goodman threw himself in front of you.
“The bullet hit him right in his left shoulder blade, which is right behind his heart…”
Queenie’s worst fear had come true. The bullet was dangerously close to Titus’s heart.
The closer it was to his heart, the higher the risk.

Chapter 284
Chiara shook her head, her eyes blank and lost, as she was both clueless and somehow knew it all at once.
‘Why?’ Chiara thought, the question echoing in her mind.
Queenie’s eyes grew red with tears. She used to wonder if Titus was devoted to Chiara, and if his feelings for her were genuine.
But now, there was no doubt left in her mind.
Just then, Paul said, “Mrs. Goodman, these past few years, you’ve never left Mr. Goodman’s mind. He loves you.
“But since you couldn’t forgive him, he was too afraid to reach out. He kept waiting, hoping you’d come back to him.
“He told me he wishes he’d never gotten on that flight to Falosia. Because of a madwoman, he lost the woman he loved most and your child, too. He’s been in so much pain ever since.”
Adele glanced at Paul and shook her head.
“Please, let’s not bring this up anymore,” Adele said, her voice firm.
Paul looked at Adele, then at Chiara. He could only shut his mouth, feeling helpless.
Chiara sat there in a daze, her eyes fixed on her toes. She’d put on beige ankle boots that morning.
Now, the tips were splattered with Titus’s blood. She couldn’t look away.
They watched as nurses went back and forth to the blood bank, grabbing blood bags one after another, barely taking a break.
The surgery dragged on because it was so complicated. To keep Titus alive, they had to keep transfusing fresh blood into him, nonstop.
By the end, the blood bank was nearly drained dry.
As soon as Jeffrey heard what happened, he had blood bags rushed in from other hospitals by helicopter.
“Mr. and Mrs. Goodman…” Jeffrey said quietly.
Charlie glanced at Jeffrey and gave his shoulder a quick pat.
Jeffrey pressed his lips together, looking at the operating room doors, then at Queenie and Chiara sitting on the chairs.
He didn’t say anything, just stayed close by silently.
Wilbert and Vera also hurried over.
The longer the surgery went on, the heavier the atmosphere outside the operating room became. Everyone’s faces grew darker, and the tension was almost suffocating.
Time crawled by, each minute feeling like a lifetime for those waiting desperately for any news.
Finally, after hours that felt endless, the light above the operating room door switched off.
That was the sign. The operation was done.
Immediately, everyone crowded around the door, hearts racing as they waited for news.
As the operating room doors finally opened, Yves appeared in everyone’s line of sight, instantly drawing all eyes to him.
“Yves, how’s Titus? Is Titus alright?” Charlie blurted out his voice trembling with urgency and worry.

Yves pulled off his mask and cap, his hair drenched in sweat, showing how tough that surgery had been.

He glanced around at everyone and said. “The operation went well, but it took a long time. What happens next, honestly, we can’t say for sure. Well have to keep watching him closely.
“He’s stable now, out of immediate danger, but as for when Titus will actually wake up…”
Yves shook his head slightly, unable to answer.
