Chapter 285
Chapter 285
“What do you mean by that? Are you saying Titus might never wake up?” Charlie asked, his voice trembling.
Yves felt a pang in his chest, but he nodded anyway.
“Yeah, and the odds aren’t good…” Yves said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Charlie’s face turned ashen, and he nearly lost his balance.
Paul quickly caught him. “Mr. Goodman, are you alright?”
Adele was deathly pale, her eyes reddening in an instant.
Yves couldn’t bear to go on, but he knew he had to lay it all out for them
Yves said, “The bullet was lodged dangerously close to his heart, which made the surgery a nightmare.
“It grazed some tiny blood vessels around the heart, so things got complicated fast, and he lost a lot of blood.
“Since the heart pumps blood to the brain, that means his nerves up there might’ve taken a hit, too. We have no idea how bad the damage is yet, so we need to brace ourselves for the worst…”
Chiara stared blankly at Yves, watching his lips move but unable to make sense of what he was saying.
Jeffrey was caught off guard. “So you’re saying there’s a chance he might never wake up?”
Yves’s brows knitted together. He glanced at everyone’s grim faces and nodded.
“Yeah, the chances are pretty high,” Yves said, his voice heavy with worry.
Adele closed her eyes, and her heart plummeted. Even though she’d tried to prepare herself for the worst, hearing that her son might never wake up still hit her like a ton of bricks.
For a long moment, no one said a word.
Yves opened his mouth, but in the end, he couldn’t get a single word out.
Titus was finally wheeled out of the operating room.
The lead surgeon pulled off his mask and looked at Yves. “The patient is out of immediate danger. The surgery was a success, but we still need to keep observing.
“Let’s move him to the ICU for a few days and see how things go.”
For the Goodman family, they didn’t care how long Titus had to stay in the ICU, as long as he was safe.
With that, the doctor stepped aside. Titus lay on the bed, eyes closed, unconscious. An oxygen mask was over his face, oblivious to everything around him.
Adele hurried to his side, while Queenie gently helped the silent Chiara to her feet.
“Titus?” Adele called softly.
Titus showed no reaction, his face still pale. Adele took his cold hand in hers.
“Aunt Adele, Titus is still under anesthesia. Let’s have them take him back to his room first,” Queenie said gently.

Chapter 285
Adele nodded, her eyes red. “Okay…”
Chiara didn’t say a word, her eyes never leaving Titus lying on the bed. Her hands balled into fists, and she stood there, watching as everyone left with the bed.
Queenie stood by Chiara at the operating room doors, watching the others disappear around the corner before finally turning to her.
“Should we go and join them?” Queenie asked quietly.
Chiara stood there in a daze, barely registering Queenie’s words. She was just about to nod when a nurse walked out of the operating room, holding two bags.
They turned to look, and saw the bags stuffed with blood-soaked gauze, all of it drenched in Titus’s blood.
Chiara’s eyes widened, the sight of all that vivid red making her eyes sting and her breath hitch.
Queenie took one look and gasped. There was so much blood. She couldn’t even wrap her head around how much Titus must’ve lost blood.
“Chiara…” Queenie called out. She was about to tell her to look away.
But before Queenie could say anything, Chiara had already passed out.
“Chiara!” Queenie shouted.
Hearing that, Jeffrey appeared out of nowhere around the corner. Seeing Chiara passed out in Queenie’s arms, he strode over and picked her up right away.
Queenie froze for a second when she saw Jeffrey. “Mr. Yates?”
Jeffrey gave her a quick look. “Don’t just stand there. Get a doctor.”
“Okay… Okay…” Queenie stammered, hurrying off to find a doctor.
After checking her over, the doctor said Chiara had passed out from emotional overload. Nothing serious. She’d be fine once she came around.
When Adele heard Chiara had fainted, she came by to check on her. Once she found out Chiara was alright, she headed out.
Now, only Queenie and Jeffrey were left in the ward.
Queenie glanced at Chiara lying on the bed, then found herself glancing at Jeffrey standing nearby.
‘Why does this whole situation feel so strange?’ Queenie wondered.
“Mr. Yates, I can stay here and keep an eye on her. I already called Ms. Lynch. She’s on her way. You don’t need to stick around, Queenie said.
Queenie thought to herself, ‘Even if you want to watch over someone, aren’t you in the wrong room?
‘Your friend is Mr. Goodman. If you’re here to look after someone, shouldn’t it be him, not his ex-wife?”
Jeffrey just glanced at her and said nothing.
Queenie thought again, “This is just getting stranger.
Jeffrey gave Chiara one last look, lying on the bed, then, without another word, turned and walked out.

Chapter 285
Queenie brows furrowed as she watched him leave, unable to shake off the strange feeling in the air
Heather arrived at the hospital in a hurry, calling out softly. Chiara…”
Queenie looked up. “Hey, Ms. Lynch. Mr. Bradford, you made it.”
Heather nodded, her voice anxious. “Is my sister alright?”
Queenie gave a reassuring shake of her head. The doctor said she just fainted from all the stress. She’ll be okay once she comes around’
Heather finally relaxed, holding onto Chiara’s hand before looking at Queenie.
What exactly happened? Heather asked.
Queenie hadn’t explained much over the phone, just told Heather that Chiara had passed out and to hurry to the hospital
Queenie hesitated for a moment, then filled Heather in on everything that had happened today.
Heather looked stunned. She exchanged a glance with Kason who looked just as concerned
“So, things aren’t looking good for Mr. Goodman, are they?” Kason asked.
Queenie nodded. “Even the doctors can’t say for sure. We have to wait and see.”
Heather squeezed Chiara’s hand, her mind spinning. She couldn’t even imagine what would’ve happened if Titus hadn’t stepped in front of that bullet…..
“Which room is Titus in? I want to go and see him Heather said.
“He’s in the ICU upstairs, Queenie replied.
They headed upstairs to the ICU. When Heather spotted Charlie and Adele, she walked over to them.
“Charlie, Adele…” Heather greeted them softly.
The couple looked up at her, and Adele asked gently, “Heather, has Chiara woken up yet?”
Heather shook her head. “Not yet.”
Adele just let out a sigh.
Heather bit her lip and walked over to the glass, gazing into the room.
Titus lay motionless on the bed, hooked up to an oxygen mask, looking pale and still
Heather already knew what had happened, so she simply bowed to Charlie and Adele.
“Thank you, Charlie, Adele… Heather said softly.
Adele hesitated for a moment, then understood. She stood up and gently helped Heather straighten up.
“Titus did this of his own choice. Besides, he did owe you and your sister, and now he’s finally made amends,” Adele said gently.
One life for another. That was more than enough to repay what he owed.
Heather tried to comfort her. “Adele, he’ll certainly wake up. Ryan’s still waiting for him at home.”

Chapter 285
At the mention of Ryan, their grandson, both Charlie and Adele’s eyes grew misty.
Charlie glanced at Wilbert and Jeffrey, sighing. “You guys should go and get some rest. Titus isn’t waking up anytime soon. I’ll call you if anything changes.”
Wilbert and Vera traded a look. “Alright, Mr. Goodman, we’ll head out then. Hanging around here isn’t going to help. We’ll come back tomorrow.”
Charlie waved them off.
The three of them nodded to Heather and Kason before heading out.
Having a crowd at the door wasn’t doing anyone any favors.
Once they stepped out of the hospital, Wilbert lit a cigarette, shaking his head. ‘He threw himself in front of a bullet for Chiara. Man, that’s unbelievable…
